wow, what a throwback to my childhood. Since you didnt understand some things ill try to explain to the best of my knowledge. In a duel, you can position your monster in 2 "modes", attack or defense, if its in defense, when an opposite monster attacks it goes against defensive points, and when a monster dies, they are no life points taken from you. If your monster is in attack mode, enemy monster goes against your attack points and if enemy monster has more attack points than your, for example, your monster has 2000 and enemy has 2200, your monster will die and you will lose 200 points. About Yugi's powers, at the beginning they said that they is some mystery ancient egyptian magic that is locked away in some ancient puzzles, as you can see Yugi has one, and that guy in the end has one in his eye, so that's the source of his "powers".

Also i can confirm that this show was cool back then when it came out, and its great to watch now when i know what is all about and its a great throwback, but the show teaches some values in life like friendship and faith in your family in an obvious way so a child can understand it and it just feels like a children's show.
