Ari is my Cat

Antidepressants alter your brain chemistry. The goal is to correct chemical imbalances in the brain that are associated with depression. He likely needed them after losing his sister if the grief was more than he could handle and if that was the case you would expect him to eventually be taken off them slowly. If he is supposed to just be on them for good then it would be for a more permanent imbalance.

I love how effortlessly this episode subverts your expectations with looking for the dad. 1st it's looking for the dad. 2nd it's about the kid faking a case to spend time with a girl he's crushing on and before you fully process that the dad turns out to be alive. All that before finding out dad is trans and the whole story relates to Veronica looking for her mom.

There are different classes of antidepressants- but you’ll mostly here about SSRI- which means selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor. But essentially of these drugs work to change your brain chemistry in order to stabilize your mood. What Duncan did was, as the doctor said, go cold turkey- and that’s pretty dangerous. There’s already physiological (physical and psychological) withdrawal from just tapering off, let alone stopping all together.

All I will say is that medications interact with the body differently depending on whether there are other medications present, on the size/frequency of the dose, and that you should, y’know, or amount in this...

The Cowboys is an old John Wayne movie that came out in 1972. It's a classic and my 2nd favorite of his.

It's actually the opposite. Kids and adults with ADD and ADHD get a range of medications which usually have some form of methamphetamine in it. Essentially an "upper". While for depression, one of the more common treatments are drugs from the SSRI class. Now while it's too complex to call these drugs "uppers" or "downers" one of the key actions of the drug is to generally "flatten" out your mood. Oftentimes one of these drugs may even be tried with suspected adult ADD patients before moving to the standard Adderall or Vyvanse. One of the more common drugs for this purpose is Celexa. Their effect can be best described as "numbing". You come about as close to feeling very little of anything and they can also inhibit libido. The actor who plays Duncan actually does a pretty good job of exhibiting the effect of an SSRI medication. It seems a bit counterintuitive that you give uppers for hyperactive patients and what seems a bit like a downer for depression but there are reasons for this methodology that would take way too long to explain. Suffice it to say that it makes sense if you have to deal with either of these mental health issues. ADD and ADHDs primary issue is lack of focus regarless of hyperactivity or not. And depression isn't necessarily caused by hypoactive brain activity, it's chemical imbalance; a person's is actively producing negative emotions. I'm not a psychiatrist, but I'm in the medical field. Maybe someone else can or has explained it better.
