The change doesn't always happen the same. The reason Christoper Eccleston left has been given a few reasons. There was speculation about them not letting him use his natural Scottish accent, it's often said he didn't want to be type cast. They wanted him to stay it was the actors choice to leave.

Every Regeneration sequencevis different with its own quirks and issues. The Doctor dies and is replaced by a whole new persona, memories are retained but everything else goes. Tennant will grow on you, when I think Doctor who Tenant is the first one that springs to mind even now.

That was the unfinished version that was put on the dvd by accident by the BBC featuring unfinished and temp sounds and music, the finished version was aired during the Children in Need charity event on the BBC, but was only aired once and not put on the dvd correctly. Also the Doctor changes his appearance but remains the same person retaining memories.
