The reason akame looked at him like that was because she didn't know if he would survive his first mission or not. He was acting so over confident it scared her because she thought that'd be a reason he would die, so she didn't open up to him or show any emotions toward him because she didn't want to get attached just for him to die right way. But he proved himself to her, so it was her being genuinely happy to see him alive.
