It's Firelord Azulon, not Azula. I don't think the family was a side story, and here's why. The Earth Kingdom family that Zuko met has very similar traits and issues that relate to his own family, if you think very deeply about it. The kid playing with Zuko's swords, just as Zuko was playing with a knife when he was younger, which I believe reminds Zuko of himself, which probably explains why he wasn't upset finding him with them. The family losing a son in war, just as Iroh lost his son in battle as well. Then you have the Earth Kingdom dad saying he's going to rescue his son from Fire Nation soldiers, at which even a Fire Nation prince, (Zuko), is going to rescue his other son, from Earth Kingdom soldiers. Not everything in this show is black and white, it's very subtle things and brilliant, just incredible how you don't notice these things until you rewatch the series.
