So a day before my trip I realized I didn't have boots for link. I ran to goodwill and extremely lucky to find a SINGLE pair of boots that fit me but they were in the wrong color. I bought them anyway because they seemed light enough to dye.

First I removed the buckles and cut the boot down to my desired height. My housemate does aging and dying for movies and TV shows for a living, so he has literally bins and bins of leather paints in our basement. I used a big mix of several different brands and colors of leather spray paint to color the shoes. They lost the nice suede texture which was expected, but I got them in the realm of the color I wanted

After the paint dried, I used acrylic paint and a dry brush to age the boots and make them look dirty. To finish them off, I slapped a fresh coat of flexible pvc paint on the soles and sewed the tan suede flap around the top. Simple link boots in a few hours.
