After a quick steaming to tame some of the fly aways and really set the shame of the wig, I got to coloring. Figuring out exactly how to do this gradient was a little tough. Usually, I would dip dye a wig for a gradient but because each individual chonk of hair has its own gradient, that wasn't possible for this wig. Using an acrylic wash also wasn't an option since I would need to add the gradient AFTER the wig was completely styled so I would know where exactly I would need to place the gradient. I considered airbrushing for a moment, but later realized it would be very difficult to reach some of the under layers and could cause a clumpy painty texture to the wig. Finally, I decided to try out using eyeshadow the same way I have to color fur for ears. I'm so so so so so happy with the results. The eyeshadow is vibrant, easy to apply, doesn't add any painty texture to the wig, and very easy to blend. I was able to achieve a perfect gradient by patting bright orange, yellow, and brown eyeshadow onto the wig. To seal the shadow, I used Got 2 Be glued hairspray

Cons of using eyeshadow to color wigs:

  • I would NEVER use this for a wig that isn't heavily styled with no movement. The shadow only sticks to the outermost layer so it would get lost any time the hair shifted or would need to coat every single strand which would take a million years on a wig that isn't basically solid
  • I also wouldn't use eyeshadow on a long wig. Eyeshadow WILL TRANSFER even after set with Got 2 Be which is why it's best for shading roots on a wig or as I used it here where it isn't likely to touch any clothing or cosplay.
  • Eyeshadow is NOT permanent. While it shouldn't fade or come off so long as I store it properly and transport it carefully, it definitely can be washed out, though it's possible some of the fibers will be stained if it IS washed out so I wouldn't try to use this as a temporary hair coloring solution for a wig you intent to repurpose.
