Time to talk about my Garyl reboot! (Finally)

I tried to put as much of the process as I could on my patreon story lens thing but I know those expire and not everyone got a chance to watch, so here's a breakdown!

The mask actually started as a BDSM horse mask Blue found on Amazon when planning their horse God EDC outfit, LMAO! I removed (most) of the decorations from EDC, repainted it, glittered it, put holographic gold in the ears, and added Garyl's two iconic horns.

The last time I cosplayed Garyl, I made your typical spiral candy-looking unicorn horn. This time, I wanted to go for more of a crystal kind of look, inspired by Helios's horn from Sailor Moon. I used worbla to make the larger horn and stock card and duck tape to make the smaller horn. Both were primed with wood glue then gesso before getting an alternating rainbow paint job. I covered the horns in several types of glitter then glazed them with 3+ coats of Triple Thick. I piled some AB crystals around the base of the horns to create a little but of a crystal formation kind of look.

One of my favorite parts if the mask is the rainbow lace applique on the sides. This was an experiment that came out better than I could have ever hoped! I used very watered down acrylic paint to dye repurposed lace from an old wedding dress. The lace took the color beautifully and now I have a new method to dye lace any color I want!

Now…. The hooves….

First of all, I started with an old pair of hooves Blue had as a base, so I unfortunately don't have anything to say about building the actually hoof part of the hoof. I know that Blue used a pair of heels with the heel knocked off and I believe a combination of expanding foam and worbla to create the hoof. I stripped off the old fur, used model magic and hot glue to fill in the cleft of the old hoof and round the hoof out to a more horse-like shape, covered them in felt, and then covered the felt in gold holographic 4 way stretch fabric.

Blue wears a shoe a size bigger than me, so I had to stuff the back of the shoe with foam and build up the arch in the correct place. That being said, the hooves were still incredibly painful and I was only able to wear them for an hour.

Covering the hooves in fur and building them up into chaps was low-key a nightmare. It was a lot of hot glue Burns and Frankensteining fur scraps together. In the end, I decided to make the boot part and the chaps separate pieces that snap together to fit better. The hooves zip up in the back.

I didn't take a single nice photo at Momo, but that was my choice. I wanted to just enjoy the con without the stress of photoshoots, but that's okay! I plan on fixing up more things about Garyl and setting up a location shoot.
