Holmat and Katsucon are right around the corner which means a lot of you might be working with fur for big winter themed costumes! So I wanted to share with you some of the things I have learned about fur through my personal cosplay experiences.

Firstly, cutting fur correctly is crucial. The best way to cut fur in a straight line is actually to tear it! Cut the tiniest bit into the fur and then tear it in half. It will tear straight along the grain. If you are cutting out pattern pieces that aren't just perfectly straight lines, the best way to cut fur is from the back with a box cutter or exacto blade. Gently cut the fabric hat holds hairs together and not the actual hairs themselves. This way, you none of your fur will have a blunt edge and you won't have crazy fur shedding all over your home!

Nowadays it's a lot easier to find fur in a range of colors and lengths but if your local fabric store doesn't have the length of fur you need in the exact shade you need, it is possible to dye fur! The easiest and least messy method to dying fur is with polydye. Polydye is a dye made specifically for dying synthetic fibers and it's what I use to dye most of my fabrics AND to dye heat resistant wigs. You can follow the dye instructions on the bottle to dye fur but I would highly suggest testing out some small pieces first to know exactly how saturated with dye your water needs to be to get your fur as vibrant as you want it. The heat from the water may make your fur a little crunky looking but you can brush it out straight again and even flat iron it if need be.

Another cool trick you can do to add dimension to your fur is to root it or gradient it with copic markers and acetone. Acetone (nail polish remover) breaks down the ink in copic markers so you can draw on the roots of your fur and use acetone on a cotton swab to blend the ink out. It's a tedius process that requires patience, but the end results look really nice!

Good luck with your fuzzy costumes! I hope this helps you all a little bit this season.
