I'm not 100% either but I think regarding Kong he got his mother to visit Japan during the christmas scene and as for motivation for Kong originally when we first see him he wants to beat Japan or the players in Japan to gain enough recognition to gain back his spot he lost back in China due to 1 mishap. As for Kongs motivation later on in the show seems to have changed or at least you can definitely see his growth as a character where he no longer is so fixated on Ping Pong and winning and losing. Also after he lost he stayed in Japan and only the coach/translator left back to China and Kong stayed. I think you are at the right tracks and once you watch the next episode everything should clear up to you regarding robot and hero thingie. Just like every week looking forward to the next ep ^^
