Our first trip back in time and it's the wrong year and wrong location, but Rose and the Doctor still seemed to have a good time... Not everyone had a good time, though... Ahem.

I think the TARDIS is definitely a lot bigger on the inside as it has multiple rooms and corridors and a wardrobe for costume changes! I loved seeing Rose in something else and she looked so beautiful with her hair and pretty dress.

A good episode. We learned a few things about Rose in this one, which I appreciate. I feel that with everything going on, we haven't had a lot of time to learn about Rose yet so I hope that we do get more from her as we go along.

Episode 4 will be available this Thursday, for our new Doctor Who day going forward 💜

Hey there, what service are you watching this on? No matter where I go the video keeps getting out of sync for me.

I really like this episode. In fact, the historical stories in DW are among my favourites. It's such fun when they get to meet historical character. Simon Callow, who plays Dickens, is an award winning actor (A Room with a View, Four Weddings and a Funeral, and much more), who is something of a Dickens scholar and has played Dickens several times on stage and screen, so he was the obvious choice for the role. When offered it, though, he was reluctant as he was worried a sci-fi show like Doctor Who might trivialise his literary hero. On reading the script, though he changed his mind as he saw how accurate and sympatheticly Dickens was written. By and large, real historical figures are represented quite well in Doctor Who. It also helped that this story was written by Mark Gattis, who as well as being a huge Doctor Who fan growing up, is also a big admirer of 18th Century writers like Dickens and Conan Doyle (he co-wrote tge BBC series Sherlock).

This episode was on the DVD that I showed in the very first episode intro and I believe it is the same as the BBC iPlayer version. I will be swapping to a streaming service from episode 6 onwards as I was having a few problems with my external DVD player 😟 I just wish all copies everywhere were the same! I had the same problem with Buffy on DVD as it was too quick so I just kept watching it on Disney.

Thanks for the quick response! I'll keep watching the YT edits till then 😁 keep being awesome

I'm sorry it's so funky 😭 Can I ask where you are watching your episodes so I can maybe check it out? I'm in Australia, so I'm watching it on a streaming service here called Stan.

Lloyd B

Hi Juliette, I think in Aus the full backlog of modern Doctor Who is currently only available on Stan. That’s how I’m watching it (and it lined up perfectly with your recording). ABC iView only has the last three or four seasons from what I can see, so far in advance of where you’re at.

Daryl

If I'm getting your meaning..... Then play your episode through something like VCL, then either slow down or speed up your copy by either -0.04 or +0.04 to adjust the different frame rates. That should keep near perfect pace.

Daryl

This one has a tad darker tone. The use of irreverent humour is a little less prevalent and more understated. Something that NuWho can be especially could at, mixing up the approach. Sometimes going for silly, other times creepy or maybe even scary.

I ended up getting Stan last week so that's where I've been watching it from episode 6 onwards. I'm really impressed with it so far! There seems to be lots of programs on it. I just have the $10 plan and it works a treat! What else are you watching on it at the moment?

xjuliettex

I really liked this one! I feel that a lot of episodes might end up being quite dark or creepy, which might be a good little match with some humour as well! It's absolutely nothing like what I expected it would be. I have to also say when I think of Star Trek, I imagine something that's probably NOTHING like what is actually is 😆 I'm so glad I have finally found DW after all this time!!

xjuliettex

I cannot wait to go back in time some more! The possibilities are endless. They could even go back to see dinosaurs! It is truly exciting and like nothing I ever thought it would be. I've never been this happy to be so wrong 🤣

Daryl

The interesting thing about Star Trek, is I imagine, at times it can be exactly what you might be picturing. Other times it perhaps wouldn't be. Those shows, brilliant as they are, sit in a position of taking themselves far more seriously. Absolutely nothing wrong with that. The crossover point in delivery between something like Who and Trek, is when they want to, they can both deliver on emotional aspects and philosophical ideas.

I don’t currently watch a lot of TV or streaming services, but a couple of shows on Stan you may like are Red Dwarf (classic British sci-fi comedy) and Black Sails (a dark, tense drama about pirates - actually a sort of prequel to Treasure Island, and one of the best written TV dramas out there). You may like to put those on your list. 😀

If you are in the US, the frame rate will be different than in the UK/AUS (Europe) versions. You would have to download the reaction (or the episode) and adjust the speed manually. There are guides online to do this.

xjuliettex

I'm not sure if sailing the high seas versions are different as well as it would depend on how it got ripped, perhaps? It's definitely why I like to let you guys know where I am watching from and how 💜

I love 'NuWho', and I love weatching your reactions to it! I joined your Patreon specifically for this watch-through :) I started my Doctor Who journey with the same episodes years ago. Never saw any of the classic ones. Eccleston was the first doctor I watched. And I can assure you, you don't need to do any 'research' on the older episodes to keep up. All will be explained. :D Looking forward to more reactions!

Cardiff is a reoccurring theme in the NuWho. In fact, there is a thriving Doctor Who tourism industry in Cardiff, including a walking tour.
