These days, the outward, surface appearance of our lives holds a certain superficial value. The pictures we see on Instagram, the tiny portions of our lives we share online, the details we choose and don’t choose to share in conversation and with others – everything is cherry-picked to make our lives appear more stable and sparkly than it really is.

The truth is, this can have pretty toxic effects on us if we perceive that everyone else is doing so much better than us and is seemingly living a perfect life. However, if how your life actually feels at the end of the day isn’t a positive feeling, the façade you cover it in and the charade you play is worthless. How your life feels is more important than how it looks.

In this poem, I express that sentiment in the form of a relationship. For a period of time, my boyfriend lived in a crummy, messy trailer home. The situation was not ideal or even comfortable at times, but I always looked at it as our middle years, just a place we were passing through. And now, I look back on those times as some of the best memories. We shared so much warmth, love, and happy, fun times in that home, regardless of how shoddy it was.

Sometimes, how something feels is more important than how it looks on the outside.
