Although the warmth, coziness, and colorful leaves that fall brings doesn’t exactly exist where I’m from (instead we get prolonged summer heat), it’s still fun to daydream about real autumn days experienced in different places of the world.

For me, the start of the new season has always meant a fresh start and new possibilities, partly because a new school year always began around this time for a good portion of my life. I’ve always viewed fall through the glowing lens of hope and promise. It always meant anything could happen in this new season and the chance for things to sway in a new direction and the chance to grow in some way was made more possible by the changing leaves and lower temperatures.

After a turbulent first year of college back in 2014, I remember getting ready to begin my sophomore year and feeling like this was my second chance, my second shot at making the most out of my college experience. I remember driving back to my apartment on my last summer night and truly believing everything would be alright, vowing to let my wounds mend and come out the other side of this year better than before.

That night, I wrote in my journal, “As a cornucopia of infinite possibilities await me, I plan to seize them. I plan to take advantage of opportunities and situations, to step out of my comfort zone, to go on more adventures, and take more chances. What do I really have to lose?

Fall is crisp maple leaves

gently lying on the roof

and hot afternoon tea

boiling on the stove.

It’s the cinnamon on my lips

and the rosy pink on your cheeks.

It reminds me

change is imminent

and trees shedding their leaves

make room for new growth.

The sway of the season

spills out golden light

and quietly confesses

what just might.
