Ground-up Lesson 6.3 Remake—LIVE! (Patreon)

Good evening Patrons!

I hope this post finds you well. I just wanted to let everyone know that the new, ground-up remake of Japanese Phonetics Lesson 6.3, which breaks down the differences between binary pitch-accent graphics and computer generated spectrographs, among other things, is now live! I highly recommend that everyone watch this lesson, as it answers many of the most common questions I receive, such as:

- The graphics on screen doesn't seem to exactly match what I'm hearing—why is this?
- I feel like I can hear a slight drop in pitch in 平板 words—am I imagining things?
- I often mishear certain patterns for others—do you know why this is happening?
- Should I worry about how to map my emotions and intentions onto words and phrases?
- I feel like speakers often sort of 'override' or 'stretch' the pitch patterns of certain words or phrases—can you talk about this a bit?

I also wanted to let everyone know know that I've permanently taken down lesson 26, the lesson on terracing, removed all other mentions of terracing from the series, and also temporarily taken down lesson 29, the lesson on dealing with emotions and intentions. I've done this because I firmly believe that the new version of lesson 6.3 is significantly better at explaining terracing and much of the important points from lesson 29. That is to say, I believe it's much more practical to indirectly learn about terracing and the takeaway points of lesson 29 through the flexible framework presented in the new version of 6.3 than it is to explicitly learn about each of them as rigid, stand alone concepts. I will be remaking lesson 29 from the ground up in the relatively near future; for now, the new version of 6.3 should be more than enough to cover said lessons important points.

I apologize for the long wait with this lesson—it has been by far the longest script in the series, and I wanted to make sure that I was articulating things in a clear way, so it took quite a long time to revise and edit. Naturally, the editing process took a long time as well, as the video length is approximately double that of a normal lesson.

In the next release of Japanese Phonetics, I'll be updating lessons 54 and 55 with high quality native recordings, and in the release after that, I'll be releasing the long-awaited remake of the negative form of i-adjectives lesson.
