Good afternoon, Patrons! I hope you're all doing well. I'm posting today to let everyone know what I've been up to with regards to Japanese Phonetics, as well as to share the new Anki flash card post, linked below.

First, Japanese Phonetics work update: For the past month or so, I’ve been working on a ground-up remake of lesson 6.3, the lesson on the subtle drop in pitch. The newer version of the lesson will include a thorough explanation on why we use binary pitch-accent graphics in this series (as opposed to spectrographs), as well as a section on why the pitch of actual spoken phrases can often seem different from binary graphics. The lesson will be long, but I believe it will be extremely useful, and help many people better understand exactly what they're studying in this course.

I've also spending a fair amount of time recently updating past lessons such that the new version of 6.3 and all other lessons in the series share the same general language and framework. To clarify, I've finished updating all these lessons offline, and will update them here, online, at the same time that lesson 6.3 version 2 is released.

In terms of where I'm currently at with this new lesson, I've finished the script (it's currently about twice the length of the average lesson, as it covers multiple topics in detail), prepared the native recordings necessary for the lesson, and just finished shooting this morning, after letting my voice rest for the weekend. JP now has the raw video footage and other files so he can start the edit.

I apologize for the long wait on this one—scripting this lesson took approximately three times as long as the typical lesson as it went through many different revisions. I hope to have everything completely finished between this Friday and early next week, and of course will post here again when the lesson is up.

And onto the Anki post! This is pretty minor, but I’ve together a post with both pitch-accent Anki decks (thanks to Patrons Céu and Neeson) and general information about Anki. This new post contains the newest versions of each deck; if you downloaded either of these a long time ago, I would encourage you to check out the post. Naturally, these decks are also very useful for new patrons getting started with their pitch-accent studies.

You can find the post here.

Remember; you can always find the entire series, including the post about the Anki decks, on the Japanese Phonetics Index Page (https://www.patreon.com/posts/japanese-index-16489306).

One last note: I originally planned on doing a live stream this past weekend, but I decided not to because I've been sick and my voice needed to rest so I could record this lesson. For the same reasons—to allow my voice to recover—some of my recent comedic videos have been quite short.

As always, thank you for your support, and good luck in your studies!

Dōgen
