HISTORY:

Although, as noted yesterday, Mann had never previously landed a film in Best Picture, he's fared quite well in Director, placing 15th for The Insider (1999), 8th for Ali (2001), 9th for Miami Vice (2006), and 11th for Blackhat (2015). Not sure why Collateral left voters comparatively cold.

DiCaprio is a previous winner (The Wolf of Wall Street, 2013) making his seventh career appearance—every single one of them in a film directed by Scorsese or Tarantino. He's also placed 9th for The Aviator (2004), 2nd for The Departed (2006), 8th for Shutter Island (2010), 8th in Supporting for Django Unchained (2012), and 3rd for Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood (2019). (His Oscar-winning performance in The Revenant fell just short at #22.) Weaver hadn't been since since the '90s, when she placed 7th in Supporting for The Ice Storm (1997) and 18th for A Map of the World (1999). Sweeney and Arlaud are new.

Petzold's scripts for Phoenix and Transit placed 11th and 8th, respectively.
