That's what the poll is this week. It was a three-way race in which Yang's A Confucian Confusion received nearly half of the vote, with Borden's Working Girls getting a third and Stone's Nixon just 17%. I've seen it only once, back in 1996 (at a Taiwanese New Wave retro, I believe), was a huge fan. Does anyone have solid info that a high-def transfer is imminent? As far as I can tell, there's currently nothing better than an upscaled DVD available—would hate to watch that and then see a Blu-ray appear three months later. On the other hand, neither do I want to wait on the assumption that recent restorations mean such a disc will probably show up at some point. Advice welcome.

Just for fun, here's a Usenet post from 1998 (apparently from exactly the stroke of midnight? seems unlikely) in which I mention Confucian Confusion. Still feel pretty much the same way about Hou, though I'm due to revisit both of those titles. Anyone know what "No, that's toward Sears" is from? Googling came up blank.

Google tells me the Sears line is from JACKIE BROWN.

I don’t know what Google magic you worked, but thanks. Almost certainly correct since it had just opened.

Vive Lamour is pretty funny! I thought you also found Tsai to be morbidly humourous

Sometimes. Sometimes not—ain’t no comedy, morbid or otherwise, in I Don’t Want to Sleep Alone. As I say, Vive has a quasi-farcical structure, but I don’t recall laughing either time I watched it.
