And I will, because y'all voted that way. A slightly closer race this week than the last few, with 53% choosing The Damned over A Place in the Sun; I saw most of Visconti's films at a big MoMA retro in late 1997, but this is one of the handful I didn't get to. (Either that or they didn't screen it for some reason.) Not digitally available at present, but fortunately I have the Criterion Blu-ray in my possession. Should make for quite a change following The Wizard of Oz and Hellzapoppin', judging from what little I know of its nature.

You can also look forward, in the reasonably near future, to a review of Joe, which just hit 52 weeks in the poll and thus automatically "wins." Whoever originally requested it can thank Daniel Waters for taking over and pushing it past the finish line.

Damn I miss the old nerd group.

If I recall, I think I had JOE in at some point. It's a classic, one of my favourite movies Mike hasn't seen, and has a lot to say about many issues that persist to this day - it's also really terrifically made. I pulled it when a tragedy remarkably similar to an event in the movie happened to my best friend (who loves HEATHERS more than anyone I know), and even thinking of the movie JOE was a little too close to home. I guess what I'm saying is, thanks for traumatizing me, Waters! (Kidding. Absent horrifying personal context, I think you'll like it, Mike.)

Guess I have to next put Rolling Thunder into my foster care

Also took a punt on The Damned (mostly for Visconti completism, along with the great skull-cradling cover), and thought it was unforgettable, sadistic stuff. I mean that as a virtue. Anomalous era to depict on screen, 1933-34, offering sufficient context for what'll come. No surprise that Fassbinder considered it his very favorite film. Right on par with his ethos (formally, dramatically, thematically), the sustained, jawdropping Night of the Long Knives recreation could be mistaken for his own. Hope it's worth your time!
