Those who voted for Michael Ritchie's Smile in this week's request poll (and Daniel Waters in particular) are frowning once again, as it wound up bested by an even older and more canonical film for the second consecutive week. Hobson's Choice had been an option for some nine months, suddenly caught fire, as sometimes happens, and squeaked out a 52-48 victory heads-up. I apparently loved it back in 1997, judging from its current #5 spot on my '54 top 10 list (between Seven Samurai and On the Waterfront!), though I have no memory of it whatsoever now. Hmm. Streaming on the Criterion Channel.

Mike, is it normal for you to like a movie this much and not remember it? I've only seen maybe a tenth as many movies as you have, but I can't imagine liking something more than ON THE WATERFRONT and then not remembering anything about it. I forget two-star movies all the time, but nothing I really like.

No. But those unrated top 10 entries are highly unreliable—I made the lists prior to 1988 all at once sometime in 1999, relying on sometimes faint memories. And I don’t move an unrated title until it gets rated, so new ratings around them can make things weird. In this case I anticipate a demotion. But we shall see.

Smile though your heart is aching Smile even though it's breaking When there are clouds in the sky you'll get by If you smile through your fear and sorrow Smiling maybe tomorrow You'll see the sun come shining through for you Light up your face with gladness Hide every trace of sadness Although a tear may be ever so near That's the time you must keep on trying Smile, what's the use of crying You'll find that life is still worthwhile If you just VOTE FOR SMILE!

Sounds like it could be a rewarding experience tbh

Yay! I was thoroughly expecting to wait the full year for this to eventually get seen, but 9 months isn't too bad... This is my favourite David Lean film, and I'd only heard of it because of its inclusion in your 1954 top ten! Hope you enjoy it this time around.
