Or late, if you prefer to look at it another way. The Producers has been an on-and-off poll option for years—I found its first four entries (the initial four get added at once) at #76-79, out of just over 3,000 total. Took 40 weeks, but it finally won, garnering a solid 57% of the vote opposite the just-resuscitated (but still comparatively very recent) There's Always Tomorrow. Not having seen this old favorite for more than 20 years, I'm curious to find out whether its hilarity remains undiminished; sometimes, rewatching a comedy to the point of memorization kinda defangs it somehow. (This happened for me with Monty Python and the Holy Grail, for example, which I'd never have imagined giving a rating as low as 79.) Easy to find if it's been a while for you as well.

As those of you who regularly check my site log know, I'm in my final pre-Skandies cramming phase: taking a second look at some of last year's most acclaimed films, juuust to make sure. Aftersun has been the only true revelation thus far (I did just bump TÁR from 68 to 79, and from #5 to #2 on my '22 list, but I've kinda known all along that was likely to happen; will explain soon), with a couple or three still to go. Normal viewing habits will resume by this weekend, and the annual Skandies countdown will kick off here on Monday. (I'll provide an explanation then for those unfamiliar. You can also just totally ignore it. Just a fun year-end survey I've conducted with friends/peers since 1995.)

Do you think you'll watch The Batman? It's flawed, but it's great to see a Batman film where he's actually doing detective work and not just punching people (although that stuff's done well too).

Definitely not gonna get it to by the Skandies deadline. Should note that I watched the opening 10 minutes and it didn’t grab me; at this point any superhero movie is a very hard sell. People have to really love it. (Which I know some people do, in this case, but it didn’t reach the sort of critical mass that makes me feel obligated.) Of course, it can always show up in the request poll.

I am curious as to what the revised Tar review will be like.

gemko

You can more or less intuit that from the final sentence of my previous review.

I just re-read that, and I see what your angle is going to be. Though I'm also curious if you share this particular reading: https://slate.com/culture/2022/12/tar-cate-blanchett-movie-ending-explained-analyzed.html

gemko

No, I think that’s kind of silly. Though at the same time I’m still not in love with the film’s vaguely mysterious elements (which that theory could help to justify).

Are you giving NAVALNY a chance for the Skandies?

gemko

No. (Unless you consider watching the first 10 minutes “giving it a chance.” Then yes.)

Mike, I notice you're doing a lot of rewatches of stuff you just saw a few months ago - is that normally part of your Skandies process?

gemko

Yes. I mean, how long ago I last saw a year’s most acclaimed films varies from year to year. And I don’t generally do it all at once like this. But look at e.g. Feb 1-2 2020.

Hello! I found your reviews on Letterboxd. I decided it was finally time to pass the buck, so to speak. Thank you!
