[Clip's weirdly edited/trimmed, but you'll get the gist if you haven't seen the film.]

HISTORY:

First appearance for Hamaguchi. It might not be his last.

All four actors are new (with Pascariu becoming the first to place for a largely Covid-masked performance). Dornan's 10th-place finish in Supporting Actor may be establishing a new annual tradition, as that's where Dan Stevens landed last year for Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga. It's the goofy cult comedy spot.

Sciamma's screenplay for Portrait of a Lady on Fire placed 16th two years ago. (So this film's screenplay fared better even though the film itself fared worse; Portrait was #10 in Picture. Extra credit for the high-concept premise, perhaps.)

I haven’t been following all the AVB’s feelings about this year’s contenders closely, but I’m definitely a little surprised to see THE POWER OF THE DOG this high. Cool. Can’t wait to see what else you all liked.

I mean.... I didn't vote for it myself (except Jesse Plemons) but we're way too low, if anything. It's ridiculously acclaimed. It'll probably be the first film ever to win both the Indiewire poll and the Best Picture Oscar.
