[This is arguably more of a moment than a scene, but on the other hand one could consider the scene to continue into the coda and to the closing credits. Voters generally described it in spoiler-ish terms; I've chosen to keep it vague.]

HISTORY:

Lowery placed 4th in 2017 for A Ghost Story.

Washington gets his seventh career nod, going all the way back to the first Pazz & Jop-style year (1996), when he placed 18th for Courage Under Fire. In between: 15th for The Hurricane (1999), 2nd for Training Day (2001), 17th for Inside Man (2006), 16th for Flight (2012), and most recently 6th for Fences (2016). (I wasn't a fan of his mumbly Macbeth.) Rampling makes it four, with previous appearances (all in Actress) at #3 (Under the Sand, 2001), #10 (Swimming Pool, 2003), and #3 again (45 Years, 2015). Plemons is three for four since 2018: He placed 3rd in Supporting that year for Game Night and 12th in the lead category last year for I'm Thinking of Ending Things. Sennott is new, as is Jude.

Intellectually I’m fine with the idea that the Skandies have been around since 1995, but hearing that Courage Under Fire was in the mix makes them seem very old indeed. As has been noted, time is funny.
