As during the George Floyd protests, I feel slightly uncomfortable just continuing my normal existence as if momentous (and in this case truly horrific, world-shaking) events aren't in progress, but also don't really know what else I could or should be doing. So I'm just gonna forge ahead. If anyone reading this has friends or relatives in Ukraine (or is actually in Ukraine—some of you are far-flung), I hope that they're/you're okay and will remain so.

Anyway, before a fucking invasion happened (though of course I was aware that we were on the cusp), I conducted my standard weekly poll, which for the first time resulted in two ties. So the second round was a four-way battle featuring two films that I've never seen (The Cremator and Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping) and two films that I haven't seen in 30+ years (A Streetcar Named Desire and Zu: Warriors From the Magic Mountain). Anything might have happened, in my mind, but it wasn't even close—Popstar received nearly half of the vote, with Zu a distant second (26%). As I noted, this is exactly the kind of film I expected folks to request when I first launched the poll over three years ago (though my "rules" do encourage you to pick older films rather than recent ones), and I'm surprised only that it didn't show up and immediately win long ago. It's rentable from all of the usual suspects. Hopefully I'll like the whole thing more than I did the first 10 minutes, which seemed more "Iran So Far" than "Dick in a Box."

Popstar is a weird one. For my money, there’s a deleted scene/song that’s much funnier than anything in the movie. It’s available on YouTube and is called “Fuck Off.” I’d recommend checking that out after the movie.
