All it took for Demolition Man to win the poll, after 24 weeks, was for Atli Sigurjonsson to announce that his birthday was coming up and he'd love the gift of voting for his request. I can't imagine that this won't kick off a spate of entreaties that should at the very least be highly amusing, whatever their overall efficacy. Anyway, I know pretty much nothing about this film apart from Taco Bell being omnipresent or something. If you're in the same boat, and want to sate your curiosity alongside me, it's readily rentable online.

As for this week's contender, The Wages of Fear, which garnered just 38% of the vote: BOOM!

I once met Andre Gregory and asked him how in the world he ended up in Demolition Man. He said Stallone wrote the part for him specifically and that was why.

Hmm, I feel like I've seen someone else mention their birthday here before, or maybe it was that someone mentioned someone else's birthday was coming up and asking people to keep that in mind? Anyway, this a nice birthday present from y'all! I predict you'll give it a 55. Hope it won't be too much of a boggle for you!

Are Woody Allen suggestions allowed? I feel so conflicted on that whole thing this week. Zelig/Purple Rose/Radio Days/ etc have been comfort food for my mental health during the pandemic, and I’ve been feeling guilty and depressed about that this week. Hard for me to navigate.

Sleeper was active until quite recently. As I’ve said before, Allen will remain one of my favorite filmmakers even if he turns out to be the Zodiac Killer. I’m very much a separate-the-art-from-the-artist guy. If it’s revealed tomorrow that Noah Baumbach did something reprehensible, I’ll think less of him as a person, but I won’t love Frances Ha or Kicking and Screaming any less. They’ll still be the same films. (I’m also agnostic about Allen’s guilt, which I wrote about years ago when the allegations first resurfaced in a major but not yet career-derailing way. enchantedmitten.blogspot.com/2015/07/on-woody-allen-ignorance-and-degrees-of.html )

A friendly reminder that one of your fondest patrons wrote all the silly stuff. Enhance your Calm and Be Well.

By the same token, if Noah Baumbach cured cancer tomorrow I won't think any more of the reprehensible Kicking and Screaming.
