Correctly suspecting that Toy Story 4 would be this week’s victor in the Films I’ve Never Seen poll, I killed some time last night looking up the most-viewed film (collectively speaking) that I’ve never seen for each year of my peer group’s “Crix Pix” survey, which has been around since 2000. Here’s the rundown, with W/Os noted (so I saw the first third of those). 2007 is a tie.

2000: The Cell

2001: Blow

2002: Austin Powers in Goldmember

2003: The Italian Job

2004: Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy

2005: The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy

2006: Little Miss Sunshine [W/O]

2007: Music and Lyrics | Transformers

2008: Cloverfield

2009: Watchmen

2010: Blue Valentine [W/O]

2011: The Ides of March

2012: The Raid: Redemption [W/O]

2013: This Is the End

2014: Blue Ruin [W/O]

2015: Spy [?!?]

2016: Kubo and the Two Strings [W/O]

2017: Split

2018: Madeline’s Madeline [W/O]

2019: Toy Story 4 [W/O]

2020: The Assistant [W/O]*

* though odds are I’ll end up watching the whole thing pre-Skandies voting, due to my annual catch-up ritual the details of which are too tedious to get into; suffice it to say that it’s revered enough that I’ll likely feel obligated to make sure I don’t like it. Though I really considered what I did see quite blah.

I will probably try to make you watch BLUE RUIN at some point.

I'm kinda surprised MD'A didn't go back and give it another shot after liking Green Room.

My recommendations: 1.) MUSIC AND LYRICS. Arguably Hugh Grant's best performance in a romantic comedy. 2.) THE ITALIAN JOB. Doesn't pretend to be anything other than slick entertainment, but very good at it. The kind of thing where you'll land on it on TNT and then watch the rest of it.

Apologies if this has been asked and answered, but do you recall (or write down) why you walked out of Toy Story 4 the first time?

gemko

I addressed it in today’s runoff poll, but of course not everyone can see that. Basically just didn’t need to see a fourth run at that scenario—even the third one was largely superfluous imo, though I (mildly) liked it. And what I saw of Forky did nothing for me, in terms of either comedy or pathos. Don’t know Cooley from a hole in the ground so I moved on to something else.

This is very useful. But I'm sticking with my usual strategy of nominating classic films that you've rated highly but never written about. It's paid off with multi-paragraph (!) raves about Ace in the Hole and The Lady Eve, etc. which I would much rather read than a one-paragraph explanation of what didn't really work about a more recent film either highly-rated or widely-seen by others. I guess I prefer the enthusiastic Mike to the caustic Mike, but others clearly disagree. To each his own. Happy new year to you Mike!

Are the question marks next to SPY because you can’t remember why you walked out or what

gemko

Not a W/O. I’m stunned that so many people (from this crew) saw Spy. EDIT: Though now that I check it looks like Spy was better received critically than I’d remembered. Must have confused it with subsequent McCarthy vehicles not directed by Feig.

Ha, I've thought of throwing Watchmen in a few times. Certainly an interesting film.

Also nobody force Mike to watch Transformers

Other movies from the last twenty years that Mike hasn't seen (and could like more than what's listed above!?): A Bittersweet Life, Lars and the Real Girl, Hanna, Headhunters, Blancanieves, Gimme the Loot, The Spectacular Now, Why Don't You Play in Hell?, Marshland, Bad Times at the El Royale, Sound of Metal.

gemko

A fair number of those were also W/Os. Sound of Metal for sure (probably gonna feel obligated to revisit in full, like The Assistant, though again I really didn’t care for what I saw), Spectacular Now, Gimme the Loot, I think Bittersweet Life, seem to recall watching a fair bit of Hanna and El Royale (possibly as samples).
