Wanted to say big thanks for this series, really enjoyed it! I'm Swedish so it's fun hearing about Swedish-related history stuff for the outsiders perspective :) It's funny how all the neo-nazi nutters here love Charles XII but there is no real love for Gustavus Adolphus. He's obviously the cooler king!

Speaking of modern Hapsburgs, I know an interesting guy named Felix who is something of a Hapsburg-obsessed amateur historian and genealogist. I would really get into it with him when I was reading Wedgwood’s book. Only later did I learn he was the subject of a documentary about his relationship to Otto von Hapsburg: Felix Austria! (2013).

Why Prussia and not Sweden? My goodness, how are you missing it: the Deluge! Sweden thinks it can take Lithuania on as a junior partner and bitch slap Poland. It manages to kill a lot of Poles, but can't seal the deal. The Swedes, not really caring and needing some help, free the Elector of Brandenburg from his feudal duties in Prussia, an autonomous backwater that's a fief of Poland. The Poles start to come back and, needing some help, grant the Elector of Brandenburg the same deal. Poland is permanently crippled, Lithuania is no longer able to pull anything like asking Sweden to invade and stuck being a junior partner to an increasingly pathetic Poland, Sweden is unable to expand further, and the Elector of Brandenburg has a territory without some Polish king or some pesky Habsburg looking over his shoulder. It's in the name, folks! We don't talk about how Brandenburg took over Germany, even though that's what really happened. We talk about its backwater tucked away to the east and detached from Germany.

If you ever get to creating that material history of Hollywoof miniseries, you'll want to reach out to Peter Labuza, who's been up to his eyeballs in exactly that for nigh on a decade at this point. For ex if a Golden Age movie star's contract has been archived at some university somewhere, chances are he's read it and can quote from it. Here's his Substack: https://substack.com/profile/11472-peter-labuza

Thank you for a great series Matt & Chris

Too late but you need to stop shitting on J.B. Peck's book just because the movie was so bad. It's a better existentialist novel than Nausea or the Stranger.

Posting this cuz I hope it adds to the conversation: there’s a great chapter in “transgender warriors” by socialist activist Leslie Feinberg, the chapter details the long history of English peasants rebelling against the feudal and even up into the 1700’s, and the men would dress as women charging into battle. Feinberg lays out how pre-Christian England had much more fluid and diverse gender roles, even describing Joan of Arc as a sort of transgender people’s champion, widely supported by French peasantry, in part mobilized because of her gender expression. The Catholic Church also co-opted transness for a while, but always sharpening things towards the patriarchal: women could wear beards and become priests and clergy for a while, but men could not transition or become feminized. Also, to keep the choir boy’s voices high pitched, rather than allow women to sing, they would castrate boys so they could sing longer. And they say the left is mutilating children!

Great job on the series! Stoked for Hell of a Picture: i’d highly recommend JD Connor’s 2 books on the New Hollywood culture industry, he’s faculty at USC so deep in the belly of the beast

Idk if Martin Luther would be a reddit or Twitter guy but he'd absolutely be a podcast guy. Possibly also a YouTube guy.

“Hey folks, got a special guest for you today. Why don’t you introduce yourself.” “What’s up everyone, I’m John Calvin, it’s great to be here.” “So, let’s get into it. You’re known for a peculiar theological stance that’s at odds with Catholicism. As my listeners know, I’m not a big fan of those indulgent idiots, so tell us, what exactly is predestination?” “Wow, what a great question. Yeah, so…”

This hurts to listen to now. I'm glad Matt is getting better!
