The reading series gets dark this week with Chapo daemon David French's personal essay about getting harassed by Anime Nazis, but things get fun again since it's David French.

We also have a chat with writer Alexander Zaitchik about his dispatch from Trumpland, the subject of his new book, "Gilded Rage." From racist yahoos to bitter veterans, we talk about the different worldviews of Trump voters and how many of them could possibly be brought out of the wilderness and into a social democratic tent in the coming years.

Trump connects with the working class? This author has never heard of the Polish Brigade. Of course these people fall for the throw away lines, fake populism of Trump.

I appreciate the unexpected Running Man credits theme at the end!

Tom Brodrick

i'm English and i also thought you found an Englishman for that voiceover

Zaitchik gave us such a refreshing discussion about Trump supporters, he was an excellent guest and I'm definitely buying his book. TY

Heard David French on Fresh Air yesterday and knew immediately this was some good good fodder 🏆

Can't wait for Terry Gross to interview these wonderful Chapo guys

What was the closing song?

To be honest it's kind of hard for me to laugh at anyone being targeted, stalked and harassed.

Now that he and everything he's ever stood for has been shown to be rotten to the core, he almost becomes sympathetic. For his family's sake, I hope the trolling stops. I also hope he never has any sort of presence in the body politic ever again.

Jack Pack

yeah I didn't like this episode. no reason to make fun of someone and their family for getting harassed by Nazis. It's not right

French's experience with legitimately shitty vicious trolling is fundamentally no different than any other ridiculously framed sectional drawn at random from his tiny rolling window of conscious experience. He's a goldfish gaping through a convex bowl at the world. A big part of the show's appeal for me is the ongoing celebration of and ever-more-contextualized historical record of pundit owns. Of course they're pitiable human morons but more importantly they are pitiable human morons who work tirelessly to advance inhuman agendas for moronic reasons. There are worse things than being a family member of a shill being temporarily viciously trolled. It's a shame that his innocent kids were targeted but the current human consequences for millions of kids, at the hands of French's articulated platform, are far worse, so fuck him. I think it's equally funny that he's a cuckold-phobe literally famous for "don't email my wife" as that he pissed himself for days as a victim of extremist versions of himself. May he drown in his own feces.

Uh also the Zaitchik interview was fantastic. Glad to hear you guys floating your theories on Trump appeal against an updated perspective. Where Zaitchik's experience contradicted the assumption, I didn't know if y'all would just double down on your shit or update it. The show has a lot of internal conceptual reference and structure so I was legit worried y'all would go full morning zoo and brand it up but now Grey Wolf doubts obliterated bitch

The Bellows

Do you think one can be against French's abhorrent, poisonous, and essentially dangerous views while simultaneously opposing the terrorization of him and his family?

piffwhiffle

No way, that's way too nuanced of a position. No dichotomies. Only logical extremes allowed. I would have gotten away with it too if it weren't for those meddling hairsplitters.

Excellent episode - the interview with Alexander Zaitchik was superb. Fascinating and genuinely insightful. Please more content like this!
