the city of Nashville is absolutely wild, because it's not really that big and everyone will know everyone else. like, social circles are linked, escalating spirals, and not discrete, flat bands. For example, my parents got backstage passes to the Opry because our pastor's (a small storefront church) father in law was part of a legacy act. And churches are a big part of it because a lot of the country guys want to stay a part of the denominations that they grew up in, so you'll have something like a small Missionary Baptist church with a CMA winner playing guitar in the worship band.

It was really disenchanting to hear the contempt and cynicism with which Nate Ruess is teeming. A lot of the stuff he said about his own music struck me as deprecative of his fans and collaborators. We get it, you hate television and popular culture and musical theatre, but Lin-Manuel Miranda did not hold a gun to your head to make you record a track for Hamilton. What a boring, disingenuous person.

that is kind of funny, how it's weird to us as americans that foreigners hate the US state but enjoy US culture, because that kind of nuance is just impossible for us to imagine. LIke, if you bought a Mitsubishi in 1972, some world war 2 vet would scream at you about Pearl Harbor, but other countries can draw a mental line between american foreign policy and their consumer choices. We can't, which is why we think smashing vodka on the ground is a fuck you to russia.

That’s funny cause it’s kinda like how citizens of countries we’ve invaded often say “We hate the American government not the American people.” But Americans like see another country try to do what we do and go “We must loot their country at all costs.”
