Don’t worry, I was also upset that she hugged the Captain over Tom! However, I do see this was a more mom/daughter episode and She does treat her crew like her children but still lol

SnazzyO

Still continuing my binge rewatch. I would have given this at least an 8.5. I loved that Star Trek swung for the fences on religious beliefs. You could be religious or not and see acceptance by the crew. Loved the interview with Brian Fuller. Sounds like there was show runner trouble with drive some plot weirdness. Without a doubt, the biggest flaw for me was the rigid adherence to episodic versus maintenance of character continuity. There was more continuity on TNG that Voyager IMO. Don’t get me wrong, they DID allow the characters to grow, but they also took shortcuts sometimes. You could see when they dragged out S1 character traits (Janeway = Starfleet, Chakotay=Native American vision quest guy, B’Elana = angry, Tom = rebellious, Harry = naive, etc…) rather than build on their growth. It was annoying. And I think they didn’t take this shortcut on TNG. But, I’m setting that aside as a systemic issue and not an episode issue. This episode I thought the role of each character relative to B’Elanna:l was well done; For B’Elanna herself, she has a moment of clarity (aka an epiphany) based on her near death experience. She believes she saved her Mom. I do too. [it’s open to interpretation, and as a Catholic, I literally believe in the supernatural… so, characters having supernatural experiences work for me). she is forever changed by this episode. Janeway - Her role as mother figure fits her well. I think she was the mental ‘Mom’ for many of the crew. Not Tuvok, Chakotay, Paris or the Doctor. For Neelix she was on an even higher pedestal. Tuvok/Chakotay are closer in age/rank and are near-peers. Tom grew up with Admirals everywhere so he didn’t see her as a mother figure (although he was extremely loyal to the Captain) or else he had Oedipal issue which fostered the lizard babies. The Doctor had a personality of an older man and a different POV as Janeway literally controls his rights to existence. Tom - I thought he was perfect boyfriend in this episode. They got it right, when they were taunting B’Elanna on the Barge - Tom does the emotional heavy lifting in their relationship. He was also deadly serious when her life was in danger. Chakotay - He and Tuvok have become more like mentors to B’Elanna. She trusts Chakotay more than Tom on some things (it seems) and continues to seek Tuvok’s guidance. She turned to both (appropriately) for advise (either in her mind or in reality). Neelix - is the one who makes her feel part of a family. Harry - will stay up with her til 3am to solve a mystery that matters to her. He’s a good friend. Bottom line; good characterization IMO, excellent production (ship was way cool), and good plot.
