The Delta Flyers is a weekly Star Trek: Voyager rewatch and recap podcast hosted by Garrett Wang and Robert Duncan McNeill. Each week Garrett and Robert will rewatch an episode of Voyager starting at the very beginning. This week’s episode is Real Life. Garrett and Robbie recap and discuss the episode, and share their insight as series regulars.

Real Life:
The Doctor creates the perfect holographic family to learn more about familial relationships; Torres reprograms the simulation to be more true to life, including struggles and hardship.

Also - Tuvok is the only one with a true happy family life. All the other Voyager members have conflict in their family life, not just Paris & Torres. Harry has parental expectations heaped on him, Janeway was dating somebody and while he looked after her dog, he moved onto another relationship pretty quickly we find out, Chakotay's only family from memory was the Maquis, most of whom under his command turned out to be traitors & spies, Neelix's fam is dead & Kes is estranged from hers.

There isn't "a whole world" created in the holodeck. The holodeck is one room of a set size projecting holographic contents. It's using the same amount of energy regardless of how large the hypothetical world is. And, ultimately, it's just projecting light and little bits of force fields when things need to feel solid. The replicator rations aren't about energy, it's about expending the materials used to reconstitute the food - that's supplies of physical matter being used up, which is unrelated to the holodeck.

Physical supplies were not the reason why it was stated to ration replicator use. The reason given was energy. You cant tell me it takes less energy to replicate an entire town for days on end than it takes to make a tuna sandwich. Come on man.
