By Bob's own admission, The Doctor's personality was partly formulated by the way he interpreted and presented his character eventually leading to one of the most dramatic character developments of any character.

I like the theme discussion. I think it's definitely an overarching theme in all of Star Trek--when do the ends justify the means? And i've always liked the Vidian storyline that examines this over and over. This comes up again in several future episodes with the second Federation ship they encounter as well Year of Hell, etc.
