Howdy y'all!

So, I have a special treat for you today! A cover reveal!

One thing I'm very proud of is the cover art that I've commissioned our super talented team to create. With my two printed books, I was able to reuse the cover art from the graphic novels themselves:

https://youngprotectors.com/typ/ete_title_page/

But a little while back, I got to work with penciler Adam DeKraker and colorist Adam Sollazzo to create a cover for a comic I hadn't published yet—Spooky Jones: Past Sins. And I was thrilled with how that came out:

And since then, I've wanted to create covers for my currently posting comics, Double Cross and Fallen. I just needed the stars to align. Well, with Adam getting a little break from his regular comic page duties, it's finally happening! I'm working again with Adam and Alex on two new arc covers, and now I can start sharing some of the art from the first one with you!

What you see at the top of this post is the black-and-white linework that awesome penciler Adam DeKraker drew. Over the past few weeks, we've worked together to figure out what scenes and elements from the story we most wanted to "tease" with our cover, and I couldn't be happier with how it all came out.

We've got the kiss between Flyboy and Cory, the broken church scene, our femme fatale Ambrosia, Flyboy breaking through the stained glass (one of my favorite moments!), the Sphere Celestial on the bottom, and of course, Teen Spooky on the case!

Also, because Double Cross has a film noir tone, we looked to capture some of that flair in the overall design. It's supposed to feel a bit like a film noir movie poster. (How well do you think we did with that?)

And these are just the pencils! I've already seen the early colors, and they just take the whole thing to another level. (And, of course, I'll be sharing the colored version with you very soon!)

But what do you think? Does this capture the Double Cross vibe? Do you think it will encourage new readers to want to read this comic? Do you like seeing a "sneak preview" of covers like these?

Please let me know in the comments below!

And thank you so much for all your support. I literally couldn't do any of this without you. And I hope you continue to enjoy what I'm putting out there. :)

More soon!

To start off: I might really not be the best reference. I generally am a bit funny about spoilers. I don't mind teasers but more often then not nowadays the best parts are spoiled in "teasers" and when you actually get to enjoy the whole thing you're left with some kind of disappointment since basically you already know the most important stuff from the teaser, suspense is toned down bc you literally wait for a certain thing to happen or show up instead of beaing really surprised and such. And sadly the surprise never comes. That being said it's so much worse with movie trailers and adds! I honestly think this new cover is really nice in certain ways but then I feel like it's way overloaded. Too many things to really focus on anything in specific. For me it feels like a cover needs a point that's catching your attention while here you don't really know where to look first. It might change a lot with the coloured version though! But basically if I was a new reader I'd actually have no real idea on what I should expect here, it's just so much different stuff, no main focus and maybe depending on which of those many aspects caught my attention, I might be a bit dissappointed that the one thing that intrigued me was maybe just a small part of it all. But as I said I might have an unpopular opinion, I know loads of people want exactly this, being told a lot of content xD But still I thought I'd share my two cents :) That being said it's still an amazing cover and I'm looking forward to the coloured version!

It's beautiful already! I love the old-school movie poster vibe it gives off

All of these covers are awesomely awesome!

Very cool! The femme fatale and teen Spooky really bring out the noir part. The stained glass part says action; the church say mystery; the kiss says there's a bit o' romance; so overall, really cool. :-) Looking at old noir movie posters, they have anywhere from 1 to 5 clusters of people/scenes (usually just people). [ETA: What I mean is: this cover fits with the variations I've seen] Nothing here feels like a spoiler; you don't know what's going on in the pieces - they're just trying to evoke a mood, methinks. (I love the other covers, too, which of course I've seen before!)

I love it! You really upped your game with this one! 👏

Great choices! This is a beautiful cover, and achieves a very tantalizing effect. If I wasn't already familiar with the story, this would intrigue me enough to make me pick it up.

Gorgeous layout for the cover! I love the film poster vibes it gives off and it definitely gives me some film noir vibes with that art deco frame/outline and font work on the title. Can't wait to see the colour version!

I love the portrait of Flyboy in the center. Just the look on his face makes me wonder what caused it. Very effective cover overall!

Had to look because somebody pointed it out, Corys face. He looks despondent?

Howdy Nadin! Thank you for your very thoughtful comment. I’m definitely with you about not wanting to see spoilers. I’m the same way. I think with this cover there are certainly some fun things that are teased, but I don’t think there’s enough context for it to actually spoil any of the really good surprises. But I’ll think more about that. Also, I hear you about there being a lot of content on the page. But looking at the colors, I do think having it colored really helps bring the whole thing together in a cohesive way. But please let me know what you think when I post those up. Thanks, again!

Thank you, Kendall! It’s good to get your perspective on this. And I’m glad you think it’s in line with the other posters you’ve seen of this kind of genre. And we’re definitely trying to evoke a mood, and in particular let people know what kind of things to expect: some action, some romance, with a backdrop of film noir and mystery.

alexwoolfson

Thank you, QueBijoux! That’s just the effect I was hoping to achieve with it. :-)

alexwoolfson

Thank you, Goodyear! Glad you like how the frame and title font worked with the rest of the piece. And I can’t wait to show you the colored version. It’s really coming together beautifully!

I like that element, too, Alaric. I think it lets the reader know there will be at least a little bit of drama in the midst of the romance, action, and mystery. :-) thank you for your kind words!

alexwoolfson

I think you mean Mitch, Bill. :-) and he definitely looks like he has something on his mind!

aaah Mitch's expression just gets to me. I love the layout and the scenes you chose. Instant noir vibes looking at it, great job!!!

A little late to the party on this, but I really like the above pencils. It's not overcrowded but conveys several key moments from the comic (and is not a bunch of floating heads). I really like that you're doing this - the covers - and that you both have been able to work together on pulling such great imagery from what we've already seen into one place. It's exciting!

I love the noir vibes from the cover.

Thank you, Adam! And I'm glad you like what I'm trying to do here. Covers aren't essential, but I think having a good one uplevels the whole story a bit. And hopefully makes things more fun for the readers.
