I have a question about the writer and the artist. I notice that the thumbs are quite different than the finished pencils. In fact, the pencils are actually in a different style: it doesn't look as if the thumbs are just rough speedy ideatic expression. Do you as the creator influence the finished pencils; i.e., do you have the artist make the characters look younger, fewer facial lines, more callow, less gangster like, etc.?

Howdy Thomas! That's a good question, and it's one of the reasons I think it's fun to share these work-in-progress images. The short answer is that I'm a very involved editor. After I get the first pass of thumbs, we typically go through two passes of notes and revisions. And then again with the pencils. I trust Adam and our collaboration, so I really try to only intervene when I think it'll make the story more clear or more compelling. Making sure the characters are creating the right impression with their looks definitely falls under that category -- and my notes will mostly be about that and the "acting" (i.e. do the expressions, gestures, and poses convey what the character is really thinking/feeling, or at least, in the case of the successfully devious, what the character is wanting *other* characters to think they are thinking/feeling.) But you'll notice that a lot of the time, the final product is quite close to Adam's first pass thumbs. Adam has a great instinct for these characters and for story-telling in general. I feel amazingly lucky to be able to work with him. And as we've continued to work together, I find most of my notes are simply sending him appreciation about how great everything looks. :)
