Howdy everyone!

So, I've just posted the last page of the Fallen teaser. It's the first time I've worked with artist Gabriel Mayorga on comic pages. And now it's time to check in with you.

What did you think of his work? Do you think he's a good fit for The Young Protectors? Would you like to see more comic pages from Gabriel?

Why am I asking?

It's very useful to have another artist for bonus comics, etc. when our main linework artist, Adam DeKraker, needs to take a break.

Also, I'm really excited about the kind of story I could tell with Cory in Fallen (Romance! Fun!), and it would be good to have a second artist who could work on that while Adam works on the main arc of Double-Cross.

And I want you to be happy with my choice for that.

Please let me know!

So, please let me know what you thought of his work over the last ten pages, in the poll here and also the comments below!

Would you like to see more of Gabriel's comic pages when Adam is not available?

Y'all are the true fans of my comics, and your thoughts mean a lot to me. I look forward to hearing what you think. :)

Thanks!

I enjoyed the Fallen pages. I'm curious to see where it goes!

I think he would do a fine job expanding upon the Fallen storyline.

While the artist is a good fit - and should certainly continue this story if and when you return to it - there's no reason to limit yourself. Feel free (he said magnanimously) to expand your team of talented artists - variety is the spice of... and so on.

Yes! I think his style suits the comic really well, and nicely compliments Adam's style for a slightly-different-but-still-familiar feel to the characters.

Gabriel would make a nice addition to the Woolfson®Stable™ ;°) I really like his more, idk how to say it, sketchy(?) style!

Seems to be quite a good fit for the woolfpack!

His work's very good and IMHO he's a good fit for the comic. Basically, what @Goodyear said. :-) He's perfect for when Adam's taking a break, yes.

Just adding extra detail that may or may not be useful. The following answer is something that occurred to me during the recent video group discussion when the topic of Gabriel's art came up, but the chatroom format is less-that-ideal for another one of my mini dissertations: Doing a quick comparison of the art of Adam, Gabriel and Julie Wright from 'TYP: Truth Or Dare', it becomes obvious that Gabriel and Julie's art are less detailed that Adam's, which makes them look more cartoony to varying extents by comparison. (To my eye this is particularly so in the pencil stage; Veronica's colouring is a great unifier in this regard). However, at the risk of sounding like a grumpy old man quoting Scott McCloud's 'Understanding Comics', there's more to art that just the surface style. There are important matters like body language, facial expressions, panel composition, dynamic page layout, etc etc etc that contribute to the readability of the comic story. I think Gabriel's art holds up very well in that regard, and especially with an action-adventure story. (By comparison, I feel that Julie's art had stiffer body language, but more expressive features because the even more cartoony & rubbery faces were conductive to facial movement, and was therefore appropriately suited to the less action orientated/more emotionally involved story.) Beyond that... I dunno. There might be the possibility that some readers are put off by fill-in art that is too different from the regular art, but where the line of demarcation for that would be I can only guess. In the online environment, where people have more exposure to different styles than would have been traditionally the case with dead-tree indie comics, that should be less of a problem in the past. Anyway, I think Gabriel will be worth keeping in mind for fill-ins.

Thank you, Ami! I'm really enjoying writing the Fallen arc. Glad to hear you're enjoying reading it!

No need to worry about limiting myself, Julian. :) I'm always on the hunt for great artists to work with on TYP. But finding a reliable linework artist for comic pages who works at the level I need can be challenging, so knowing that y'all like Gabriel's work is really helpful for me.

"Perfect" sounds like a good endorsement, Kendall. Between the vote and the comments, I'm definitely hearing that y'all liked his work. That's really good to know.

Thank you for your very thoughtful and detailed reply, Saxon. Yep, each of the guest artists I've hired (Julie Wright, Tana Ford, and Gabriel Mayorga) have their own unique styles that lend themselves to certain kinds of stories. But it's good to hear that you think Gabriel's a good fit for this kind of story. In addition to action-adventure, Fallen would have quite a bit of romance, but based on the pin-ups he's done for us, I have confidence that Gabriel can handle that as well. I agree with you about his strengths and why those things are important. ("Understanding Comics" was a big influence on me when I was starting out with this.) Good story-telling needs to come first, and that's what the things you mentioned really contribute to. Thank you, as always, for your good input.
