OK. So the survey I posted up yesterday has been up for 24 hours and the answers are very clear and consistent, with pretty much the same percentages no matter how many new folks answer. Here are the results! IS REMOVING ALL ADS FROM MY SITE AN APPEALING MILESTONE GOAL? The answer to this question was a resounding "NO." Less than 5% of you said removing all the ads, whether they were animated or not, would make you happy. Perhaps for that 5%, it would add real value, but for almost everyone else (more than 95% of you), different Milestone Goals would clearly be more appealing. Good to know. HOW ABOUT REMOVING ANIMATED ADS? The animated ads bug more people (myself included, actually). A full 30% of you said you'd love me to remove them, and if you add in the 5% who want all ads banished, that means well over a third of you would find it appealing for me to disable animated ads on my site. That's a good chunk of folks. Also good to know. WHAT ABOUT SEXY ADS? This was the most clear. Only 1% of you said that keeping the ads on my site PG-rated would be an appealing Milestone Goal. 28% of you gave that idea a big shrug, and for 71% of you that change had absolutely had no appeal at all. SO WHAT AM I GOING TO DO? Based on these responses, I'm going to replace all the Remove Ads Milestone Goals. The whole point of Milestone Goals is to add extra value for Patrons, and if a Goal isn't especially appealing, it gets the boot. I will keep the "All Animated Ads Banished!" Milestone Goal, though. Unless I come up with something with a ton more appeal, I think there are probably enough folks who want them banished that it would add some real value to being a Patron. And for now, I'm also adding in two NEW Goals: - at $3,500/month, I'LL COMMISSION A PATREON-ONLY WALLPAPER from an artist I recently met at Nijicon. It'll be a colorful pin-up of our heroes, DRAWN WITH AN ANIME FLAVOR. It's always fun to see other artists' takes on our characters, and I think an anime-type style could be especially cool. And you'll have access to a wallpaper that's an extra special thank you, just for you. - the goal at $4,000/month will stay what it is -- which is making the Full Monty, NSFW Digital Kickstarter Rewards available as Special Digital Rewards for Patrons. I think that definitely has some appeal, even for current Kickstarter backers, since it would allow me to include some NSFW Sneak Peek Sundays. - and at $4,500, I will make a change to the site that has been the biggest feature request I've received since I started with webcomics: I'LL CREATE A BOOKMARKABLE LINK THAT WILL TAKE YOU TO THE MOST CURRENT PAGE OF THE YOUNG PROTECTORS. It's going to take some work to make that possible, but I've done some research, and I'm now convinced I can do it with my current webcomic software. If we hit this goal, I will make it happen. WHAT ABOUT FOR THE FUTURE? Well, you all included some excellent suggestions in the survey. (And many of you were so sweet! A typical answer was "Just letting us know you don't need to spend so much of your time worrying about revenue and can spend more being creative is all I care about." Wow. You all are just so awesome! :D ) In addition to a request for that bookmarkable link to the most current page, the other most popular request was for short prose (non-comic) stories that would give some background information on a particular character. Basically, a short story that would expand on the short summaries you would find in that character's ORIGIN CARD or FIRST-TIME CARD. I'm going to have to think about what exactly that would involve, but I really like that idea. So I'll think about adding some Milestone Goals around it at some point in the future. (Also, a couple of you pointed out that the ads that *really* bug you are those Disqus ads that sometimes appear above the Comments Section and link to celebrity gossip, etc. I totally forgot about those, so maybe I'll have another survey sometime where I ask how many folks would want those puppies removed.) THANK YOU! Thank you very much for taking the time to participate in the survey. That totally helps me and your fellow Patrons out by making being a Patron potentially even more awesome. It's great information for me, and you're awesome for doing that. You totally rock. :D More soon! Alex

Not bothered by the ads, but am bothered by the Spooky bleeding out while fighting thing :P

Not bothered by the Project Wonderful ads (other than some of the animated ads and overly explicit nookie), because they're usually "our" ads - stuff that's on your page because it meshes with your keywords and audience. I didn't think about the celeb gossip ones until after I'd done the survey, because for me they're always below the comments and I mostly don't scroll down that far after the first look at a page when it goes up - but those are the ones I'd like squashed.

Good to know, Jules. In a few weeks, I'll send out another survey to see how strongly other folks feel about getting rid of them. :)

One of the things I'm almost obsessed over is finding out how you went from idea to putting together a team. I'm sure I wouldn't be the only one interested in that narrative. I'm planning on doing a couple of similar projects myself if I can figure out how to realize it, and it would be soooo helpful to me and other creators (especially those who can't draw) to get to know the step-by-step of this amazing thing you have done. I'm not even sure it can be replicated, but I sure as hell would like to try a cheap knockoff!

I've thought about writing a short "how-to" book for other writers wanting to copy what I've done. If I get some more time, I think I'll do that. :)

I'm really excited for the possibility of having a bookmark to the current page. Not just because it means you're over halfway to not needing your day job.

hey, I don't wanna be a spoil sport, but my inner web developer is prompting me to say that a link to the latest page would be super easy - just forward to the permalink of the latest RSS feed entry. I could write you up that php page that'd do that inside of an hour - or a even better, a custom page template for wordpress.

Thank you for the offer, Matt, but I've found RSS with this site has been a bit... problematic. It works, and then it doesn't, and then it works for some, until it doesn't... The solution I found is permanent, it takes advantage of the webcomic software, and once I put it in place, would have the support of the developer. I'm glad you'd look forward to the character short stories, though. :)
