Yeah this is one of my all time favorite moments in the whole story. Just like with how Yuji unlocked a greater potential in himself with just a slight shift in how he perceived himself, Megumi does the same here in that letting go of the mentality that was holding him back and taking a big risk allowed him to blossom into....I dunno a much stronger teenager. Most shounen power ups come from offscreen training or rushes of emotion, but another thing I like about JJK is how it handles desperate situations and how a person can evolve from a burst of adversity driven inspiration or even just "huh, I never thought about it that way". Like, I have too much energy right now to not break this down so I'm gonna do it. In what I like to call "Megumi goes Apeshit Bananas", he discards his old mentality of "I have a secret weapon that can resolve the situation at the cost of my life so if worst comes to worst I'll just use that" and decides to seek something beyond what he currently is. Up until this point he's made small attempts to improve but never really PUSHED himself because he always has his "Trump Card" to rely on if shit hits the fan (as was discussed by Gojo in this episode), so in short he's had a safety net to rely on and once that's used he has nothing to worry about because he'll be dead and whatever problem was in front of him will be solved. What Megumi doesn't realize is that by believing himself dependent on said Trump Card, he's been stunting his own growth and limiting himself. Rather than experimenting and imagining new ways to fight he's just been very linear and predictable, he hasn't been giving it 100%. He's been seeing death as necessary and inevitable if things are at their worst, rather than simply a consequence of failure. But here, he discards that and uses mortal peril as inspiration to try something he's never tried before, something that not even sorcerers on Nanami's level could achieve...and he fucking DOES IT. His thoughts upon opening his domain must have been "That worked?", to "HOLY SHIT IT WORKED!!" What ensues next was pretty one sided.

What's just as impressive as Megumi's evolution here is the way he absolutely dismantles an opponent that was once giving him his own beatdown, most people don't notice this but he was actually pretty tactical about it. Megumi knows how fast this thing is so he solves this problem by stopping its mobility using the frogs, ensnaring it's legs to keep it from darting around. He then uses the inherent power buff given to sorcerers who cast Domain Expansion to assault it physically, then using a literal shadow clone to tank a hit that would otherwise kill him, then calls out two doubles of Nue to bombard it with attacks, before finishing it with a surprise blow through the chest while it's gloating by hiding within that shadow of the cursed spirit. This whole sequence is a beautiful mix of Megumi thinking strategically and just improvising random shit on the spot based on the nature of what his powers do. Though there's one extra detail that I didn't notice until literally right this second while typing this. Most of this sequence isn't even the real Megumi fighting, it was the clone. When he went from opening his domain to kicking the curse that was nowhere near him at the time I thought "Huh, weird. I guess Domains give you a speed buff too.", but then I thought about how not only do we not see him make a double of himself but when it's blasted in the head and dissolves we don't see the real Megumi and when his Domain is dispersed he's already under the curse's shadow like he's been there from the beginning. It's because he was. This means that right after opening his domain he binds the curse's legs to draw it's attention to the floor, seeing that he can make several frogs he realizes he can make duplicates of beings that he conjures via shadow which gives him an idea, then he quickly makes a duplicate of HIMSELF and blindsides the curse with an unexpected attack to the face to make it think "oh shit my opponent is over here now" and dives underneath the ocean of shadow while his clone does the fighting, he experiments some more after his clone gets destroyed and delivers the finishing blow to it's blindspot from inside it's shadow with what has to be his strongest shikigami at the moment. He does all of this without a single misstep. The plan was slapped together in the heat of the moment and it was still flawlessly executed, all while in fight or flight mode inside a shitty unfinished domain. Megumi needs a promotion on the Panda Tier List, put him up on top with Todo for fucks sake. No wonder Sukuna likes him so much, if I were the final boss I'd pull a Goku and let the kid get stronger just to see what else he comes up with. (oh and also the anime cut out one small bit where you can see him briefly riding on top of swimming frogs, it's not an important detail I just thought it was cool.)

It's good character progression indeed. Much better than a shadowclone training montage.

That's actually something I totally missed.... no wonder Sukunda likes him... he could sense this...
