Hey everyone!

I've been wanting to bring back the old GaMetal Development posts that I made in the early days of the GaMetal Patreon. I was about to put together the song order for the Game Boy Medley, when I realized this would be a great chance to go in-depth with my song ordering process for medleys, which is a topic I get asked about often.

In the first half of this video, I discuss how I go about coming up with the song order for a GaMetal medley, using NES Medley VI as an example. In the second half (19:41) of the video, I go through the entire process, starting from scratch, of determining a rough first draft of the Game Boy Medley song order.

If you have suggestions for the GaMetal Development series, feel free to let me know either in the comments or message me and I'll take it into consideration for the next edition. Till then, let's learn about the GaMetal Medley process! :)

How I put together Medleys (GaMetal Development #3)

I'm bringing back the GaMetal Development series! If you could really call it a series... I only had 2 other posts outside of this one... but hey, it's back! :D For this edition of GaMetal Development, I'm tackling a question that I get asked often: How do I go about determining the song order of a GaMetal medley? In the first half of this video, I discuss how I go about coming up with the song order for a GaMetal medley, mostly using NES Medley VI as an example. In the second half (19:41) of the video, I go through the entire process, starting from scratch, of determining a rough first draft of the Game Boy Medley song order. Idea for next GaMetal Development post: Your process from first hearing to creating an Atmacoustic. Also this was really fascinating!

Could you post an update on the drums? Looks like an upgrade to TD-30/50?

Watching people optimize—whatever form that optimization happens to take—is fascinating. I started watching to see if it would provide any insight into, like, putting together playlists (which is the closest I can come to composing, at least right now), but it was less the specific “here’s how we make the music sound good” and more the general “I need to optimize putting these pieces together” that kept my interest the whole time. (Not to discount the musical part. That was cool too!)

What was that website you were using to measure BPM?

Ah yes, perhaps I should give that first GaMetal Development post a little bit of a revamp. I'll try to get that done soon and when I do I'll leave another comment here. :)

You could actually use a similar approach to how a put medleys together to put together a playlist or even an album. Easy version: Start off with a few upbeat/intense tunes, then have a slower piece or two, rinse and repeat. Changing up the feeling of the song list after a certain feeling gets too 'overdone'. :)

http://www.all8.com/tools/bpm.htm You basically just tap any key to the beat and it displays the average BPM of your taps. There's a way to do this in Logic but I found it to be a bit... cumbersome. I just use this site since I can just go straight to it and get what I need.
