Pink and blue balloons and papers streamers were strewn across almost every room of the house.  There was a giant cake shaped like a baby bottle.  A banner in the living room read: “Welcome Baby!”

He put his briefcase down and scratched his head.  It looked as if she was getting ready to throw a baby shower.  This was strange.  She hadn’t mentioned this to him previously.  It definitely wasn’t their baby.

“Darling?” he called out.  “Are you...throwing a shower?”

She appeared from out of the kitchen with a wide smile and nodded her head.

“Oh, I didn’t realize.  Who’s having a baby?”

“It doesn’t really matter,” she said with a shrug.  “It’s a surprise party anyways.  Why don’t you go upstairs and change out of your work clothes and come back down.  I’ll make you some dinner and then maybe you can head out for the night?”

That did sound pretty nice, he thought.  He considered heading over to the bar.  Or, maybe, paying a visit to Melissa.  Lost in the possibilities, he wandered up the stairs and into the bedroom to change.

Once out of sight, she sprinted back into the kitchen where the rest of her friends were waiting eagerly.

“Well?” a friend.

“He has no clue.  He’ll be back down in a few minutes.  Everyone get in position.  Let’s welcome that cheating son-of-a-bitch into his new babyhood.”  She picked up a large disposable diaper in one hand and a wooden paddle with the other.  The other girls did their best to stifle their laughter.

Now, to wait...
