Personally, I think it prudent to avoid tying metaphysical phenomena like magic and monsters down with hard rules. There's little need and justification for it, removing much of the weird impact and the mystery surrounding them. Sure, have characters able to understand these systems and be experts in their fields, but that information doesn't need to be fully transparent for the audience. Be wary of tipping your hand to avoid being mired in scrutiny.
