Who'd have thought Josh was such an ear wax connoisseur? Three minutes in and I've heard more about ear wax than ever before in my whole life 😆

It was such a quick segment on the ship, you probably missed Chris barrie from red dwarf playing the captain.

Ian Richards

Apart from Chris Barrie as the ship's captain, this episode also had Terry Jones from Monty Python as the drunk vicar, Helen Atkinson-Wood (Mrs Miggins the pie-shop owner from Blackadder III) as the woman advertising Painaway with Dawn French, and Daniel Peacock (Mental Mickey from Only Fools and the hairy labourer guy who buries Victor in a hole in One Foot In The Grave) as the man who dies in the cabin. The bit where the Shakespearean actor playing the postman makes an off-stage crack about Vyvyan ("does one advert and he thinks he's Dustin Hoffman!") is also an in-joke, as between Series 1 and 2 Ade Edmondson appeared in a TV commercial for Natwest Bank where he plays a character as close to Vyvyan as the ad-makers could feasibly manage without having to pay the Young Ones creators. It's on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2rQir6Rsoc

We hired our first video recorder from rumbelows! It was bluddy huge!! First thing we properly taped was Charles and Diana's wedding.

Danny

I learned recently that the reason VHS took off over Betamax was down to pornos. Early VHSs of films were so expensive, easily $100 for a film like Star Wars. But the demand for porno tapes was so high it drove the price down as they chose VHS as their standard format. Alternatively, in Japan, they went with Betamax as their standard.

Danny

I recall even in the early 90s, any time I'd go to a relatives house , I'd always see they had a little saving pot/tub with Rumbelows on.

Hah! The song from the last episode, if you watch it again, it's a Eurovision joke. They're taking the piss out of how silly and ridiculous Eurovision entries are/were at the time. When I watched it as a kid I didn't get that context either, I just thought it was funny because it was silly. OH WOW! I just had a look at the credits. The woman off the painkiller advert (the blonde lady), is Helen Atkinson Wood. She played Mrs Miggins in Blackadder 3!

David Lyons

I feel like I really shouldn't be enabling this discussion...but brown ear wax? I thought everyone had yellow? Also I am a little concerned as to how Josh knows about the consistency of Asian ear wax!

Colin Bayley

Also because VHS got into the rental market. Because video recorders were so expensive when they first came out most people rented. You had to buy if you wanted a Betamax.

is the old lady with the glasses at the start the same one from one foot in the grave ?

Saul

I like that you reasoned out that Neil would be the main target if they all had to lose their virginity - 'he's wearing that dress, and he's a pacifist, he won't fight back'.... No-one in the show said any of that - but you had it all figured out at lightning speed Josh, like when Terminator has multiple targets and has to triangulate them 😁

Saul

Rik and Ade did some great adverts. I always remember Rik for his advert for Zelda, but he did a bunch of them for a load of early 90s SNES and Game Boy titles. You can find them on YouTube under 'Rik Mayall Nintendo Commercial Compilation'. Rewatching it and seeing a Game Boy for £39.99 made my head spin a little.

Scott

did josh spot Rimmer ????

Ian Richards

Just looked up Rik's Zelda ad, it must have passed me by at the time! My favourite Ade cameo from that era is him playing the jilted boyfriend in the video for "Terry" by Kirsty MacColl. Such brilliant and utterly daft comic energy, all without uttering a single word. They must have had a whale of a time shooting it - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pivL4QdtiuM
