I really don't get the hate for series 1. Harry Enfield isn't the most natural sitcom actor and is a bit of a fish out of water, but it's perfectly well written with some really funny moments. It isn't as strong as it will be, and this bodes well for Josh given that he's already really enjoying it. I really enjoy this series too. It's by no means "awful" as you have the excellent Martin Clunes, Caroline Quentin and already very decent scripts from Simon Nye. Harry Enfield is arguably the weaker link but he's really nowhere near as poor as people make out. For me, series 1 of MBB is no inferior to the rest of the series than series 1 of OFAH is to the rest of that series. It's early days, the show takes its time to find its stride, the truly fantastic stuff is yet to come, but it's perfectly decent telly from the outset. I'm really enjoying re-watching these with you Josh and glad you seem to be enjoying them too!

I agree series 1 isn't as strong as the rest of the series but I think this episode is the best of series 1.

David Lyons

That's not just any cartoon Dermot picked, it was Danger Mouse :D

Tony Smyth

Did you just say Business Mouse? https://youtu.be/Hr3eT3kZz4A

You LOVE Josh. I understand, but will you please stop telling the rest of us over and over again? He has a girlfriend.

2 of the best characters in red dwarf wasnt fully developed till season 4 , kat and kryten ,yet the 1st one was still worth watching for development ,same for this series

Don't we all love Josh? I'm sure we do! We don't all imply it but hey, I'm the demonstrative type, what can I say! And he knows it's purely platonic even if you might be a bit confused about it, so don't worry your little head about it. Do I detect a little jealousy here Tony? That we don't love you instead? I can't think why we don't love you. It's a real head-scratcher, that one. I'm fairly certain deep down you know why though. Have a smashing weekend, Tone! I know I will! :-D

BigChanChan

I agree and I'd much rather watch a show that gets stronger with each passing season than the other way around.

Ash Jeffries

Yes, completely agree David! Many sitcoms may start strong but peter out and become lacklustre. I much prefer a sitcom that grows and finds its feet over time. I think when you have just the one writer especially, you just see them honing their craft. They see what has worked and what has been a bit flat and you get more and more pure gold as every episode and series passes. Much like the best stand up comedians.

Keith Pratt

Definitely a more rewarding experience to watch it from the beginning. There were so many comments on previous posts saying how series 2 is sooo much better, but that's really not the case. It may be a tad better, but it still had the constraints of being in an 8:30 pm time slot on ITV at that point and feels fairly tame compared with what came after. Still good though.

Gary losing his shit at the end, insulting Graham and smashing the chess set with a cricket bat is probably my favourite bit of series one. Martin Clunes plays angry disconcertingly well. You sort of see a few important themes first explored in this episode: the extent of how toxic Gary and Dorothy's relationship is, how Gary and Dermot basically drag each other down when they're together, how Gary and Dermot's solution to any difficult situation is lying, and how Dermot possibly had a half-chance with Deborah if he hadn't blown it by being stupid and selfish and trying too hard. These all become recurring tropes throughout the series.

Tony Smyth

Actually Ash, I'm a 14yr old girl. I lie a lot and I think jokes are funny. Can we make this whole thread about ME please?

Tony Smyth

Why has nobody ever nominated Phoneshop? It's a shorty and it's 'clever' funny as fuck, and twice as modern as Modern Toss so shut up. A dad from Inbetweeners is in it. I can't remember his name. I'm not a encyclopedia, innit Bro? (Simon's Dad! That's his name. <strike>Or is it Jay's Dad?</strike> -The blondey cunt. The pervert. Lovely bloke in REAL life, apparently.) Is it because one of the other main characters is called Ash?

You need to give it a rest, Tony. Most of your comments are negative or irrelevant in an otherwise pretty happy comments section. Just take a step back and think before you post, it's tedious for everyone but you.

Tony Smyth

You don't get it. If it wasn't for obnoxious cunts like me people like you wouldn't reply. TRAFFIC = $$$$ Ask your boyfriend.

Josh

Uh.... I have wanted this show to win for a while now and tbh I had completely missed that it won on a poll! That's a lovely surprise. I look forward to watching you react to these. Although I can understand why some people say it's aged badly personally I think it's still very funny and holds up.

It definitely gets better with season 2, but i always enjoy Martin Clunes in this, so have no interest in skipping :)
