Starlight

This is my favourite episode. Love it when they all eat the chocolate. Hate that we can't get the blue Club original bars anymore, I used to love them!

Brilliant. I like this one. I thought it was going to going to be more Red Dwarf tonight, (and . The Royle Family RULES. This has really cheered me up Jim. Beam me up Scotty..

Austin Stratton

Jim got angry at Anthony when he'd offered to go to the feathers to get him a gig cos he was trying to get a sneaky way to go to the pub.. when he said they weren't ready for a gig and they needed more practise it ruined his plan XD

Austin Stratton

The only show where 75 seconds of silence and a family eating chocolate could be entertaining XD Love it

Tony Smyth

I changed me official name from Anthony to Tony ,immediately after this episode was initially broadcast. - And I've never regretted it.

If you’re looking them up, the actual name of the band is “Manic Street Preachers” colloquially known as The Manics. They’re a Welsh indie/rock band who were huge from about the mid 90s to early 00s…and they’ve just (very recently) topped the album charts again.

Anonymous

Just genius! How many minutes did we watch them just eating chocolate bars? I actually grew yup on the housing estate where this is loosely based..Wythenshawe in Manchester...it's EXACTLY like that. And yeah, Josh...you're right about the jingles.....so last millennium!

Keith Pratt

I saw Manic Street Preachers 5 times in the 90s at various festivals. They had a band member (Richey Edwards) go missing in 1995 and he's never been found.

Oasis sing The Royle Family theme tune

Charlie

I had never noticed before that the choice of television programmes in the background on this episode - Michael Barrymore at the beginning and then Rolf Harris - hasn't aged at all well. Just in general, the pop culture references in this episode, like Oasis and Manic Street Preachers, or watching Changing Rooms, really date this episode like few others.

Nimble, real bread but lighter.

CatsandCrafts

They’ll likely come back again one day. Quite a few of the classic favourites do don’t they. I do know one thing…..I really fancy a bloody Wagon Wheel now! Lol.

This and the next episode (and the Christmas Special at the end of series 2) are the highlights of series 2 for me. The chocolate biscuits and advert jingles, and Anthony discussing his band. They're so rotten to him but he's the youngest and I'm sure it's so true of many families. He mentions Oasis and The Manics (short for The Manic Street Preachers) and I imagined you would have heard of Oasis, Josh, but would've been surprised had you heard of The Manics. Oasis were considerably more commercially successful both here and worldwide, but The Manic Street Preachers are - in my opinion - the far superior band, just more my cup of tea musically I suppose. They're a Welsh band who have had moderate success here. They never truly broke into insane commercial territory like Coldplay (yawn) and Oasis (yawn again) but I suppose that might have helped them remain grounded. The theme tune of The Royle Family is an Oasis song - Half the World Away - and it is one of their better songs IMHO - although I think I like it more probably just because it's the theme tune to The Royle Family to be honest! :p Line of the episode for me is Denise: "I'm not having Exit play Access All Areas at my baby's Christening." - just something about the specificity and rhythm of this line - love it! :-D Josh, you picked up on Denise and Barbara both twisting their hair habitually - this is such a great detail, really adds to the credibility of their being mother and daughter. But that's what I love about The Royle Family - there's zero plot, the dialogue isn't even jam packed full of jokes, but it's so wonderfully detailed and rich where character and situation are concerned. It's completely credible and this makes it so enjoyable and relatable to watch. :-)

Manic Street Preachers are a great welsh band that were around at the same time as Oasis in the 90’s but are still going now and recently had a number one album in the UK. Also, the theme tune to the Royale family Half the World Away is by Oasis

Tony Smyth

@ AshMJ37 I couldn't agree more. You articulated my sentiments before I had formed them.

Many Americans imagine that Britain is somehow like Downton Abbey, but the Royle Family is probably one of the most accurate portrayals of real life for so much of the population, at least I’m the late 90s / early 2000s. So well written and performed, the pacing, just everything is perfect. I love the line “I’ve been dead busy”, “me too. Did you see Jerry Springer?” Just a perfect counterpoint. So many good lines and moments in this.

Tony Smyth

Every line is a punchline, unlike other stuff where you get a lead up to the joke from the lesser characters. Everybody in this show is a STAR. Every line is a punchline. - Fair play to Caroline and Craig (Denise & Dave) and all of the other writers, and the actors too and the cameramen/women...and the production crew.

According to IMDb.... Ricky Tomlinson ... (additional material) (7 episodes, 1998-1999) My arse... How come he gets credit? The only time he added additional material was when farted on set.and accidentally followed through. I do something similar on a regular basis and I end up having to call the nurse. They left that those incidents out of the outtakes. I still love him though. He's the Grandad I never wished I had.
