Look forward to watching you stomach your way through Mr Creosote again!

Every sperm is sacred..

I remember seeing your reaction to Mr Creosote on YT ages ago, it was hilarious (sorry!) 😂 I'm torn between hoping for your sake you've been desentitised and it's easier this time and hoping for our sakes that it's just as funny as last time ;)

You need to react to Monty Python's Flying Circus now. This would mean opening up the flood gates to sketch shows though.

I normally skip past the Mr Creosote scene but that wouldn't feel fair this time. I think that this film is better than it actually is. Maybe because it is so random and it just annoys/offends people. I like things created by people that don't care about offending people, so long as they aren't arseholes in reality. Thanks Josh

I've always enjoyed Meaning of Life, but I'll admit that there's a lot of repetition inbetween the genius parts. The Crimson Permanent Assurance bit at the beginning especially went on way too long, and was pretty much just a Terry Gilliam vanity project. Beautiful to look at, but not particulary funny. I also found the 'every sperm is sacred' part gets a bit tedious. Not a bad film, but compared to Holy Grail and Life of Brian, it doesn't compare. I'm still happy it exists though, because even when there's repetition, there's some genius stuff throughout like Mr Creasote, the tiger scene and the sex education scene for example.

always loved the meaning of life, it has its flaws but all in all its great. i think peoples biggest problem is that it has no real direction or story...after the two phenomenal highs of life of Brian and the holy grail people expected something better but all we got was a feature length episode of the flying circus with sketches with at times a very tenuous link to life.

Lol that is a tough scene to sit through so I don't blame you. I totally agree man, it is a crazy movie but I loved it.

I only saw this film the first time when I was about 17 - downloaded off Emule or Edonkey something like that, so about 2003/04. I was always absolutely baked when watching it, too. Didn't really get it the first couple of watches, but there was enough to love. Every time I watch it, I get something new from it because it's so varied. So much variation between the low-brow (vomit, sex etc) and the high-brow (philosophy jokes), so it gets funnier the more you learn. Oh and Nietzsche is pronounced like that outside of the US. I don't think it's supposed to be pronounced like Neechy, but I don't think it's that important.

I got a whole lot of sex education from this when I was 11. Had a portable tv in my room. Couldn't sleep one night, turned on tv.. ta daaa...'meaning if life' was on. On one hand I learnt ..an awful lot about sex, on the other hand I was so totally traumatised by Mr Creosote that to this day I can't watch that scene😂🤮🤮🤮.

Every sperm is sacred was filmed in colne and Burnley where Im from. Every day I'd be walking down those streets to work and be held up by the local catholics singing that song was a nightmare when I was in a rush

It's my least favourite of the movies but I don't hate it by any means. I can appreciate the sheer scale of the effects, choreography, and a return to the sketch show roots...but the humour just wasn't at as high a level as their previous works for me. As a side note, I remember when the game Seaman came out on Dreamcast it got a lot of comparisons to this movie. Wonder if they saw this and were inspired to make a game about raising fish with human faces? Also, you joke about taking notes during the sex education scene, but seeing this as a teen was more useful than the actual lesson I had in school! We put a condom on a carrot, looked at some diagrams and that was about it!

Even some members of Python weren’t happy with the film (John Cleese says the whole film was “a bit of a cock up”) and probably wasn’t the best ending to a 15 year career that helped change the face of comedy…but it certainly has its genius moments. The sex education lesson, the soldiers giving presents in the trenches, the Sgt marching up and down the square, and the tiger are all highlights. And the sheer witticism of Eric Idle’s Galaxy Song has always made me smile (Stephen Hawking was a fan too and even “sang” it at Python’s final stage show in 2014).

I'm someone in the middle! It's basically a prolonged sketch show with a thread. It's a bit thin on laughs and some sections went on too long - enough to highlight the lack of gags. It has some funny moments and it was well made. The opening section with the accountants was beautifully done for example, however could have benefitted from a few trims to prevent it from dragging. Decent, but I've seen better for sure.

This one is more of a long episode of Monty Python's Flying Circus in that it's a number of sketches stitched together rather than having a singular narrative. It's easily the worst of the Python movies, in my opinion, but still has a number of chuckles throughout it.

Danny

I've always avoided this so thought id try it. Geez I couldn't last 20 minutes. That opening scene went on for an eternity and sucked the life out of me. So boring and unfunny. It stinks of Terry Gilliam and I was getting horrible flashbacks of his other film, Brazil

Jay

From what I remember, the other Python members weren't happy with Gilliam pushing to get the opening scene in the movie. It was a vanity project above all, and apparently took up a massive amount of the budget that could have been spent elsewhere. I really love a few Gilliam movies, but I think with this he selfishly just wanted to push his career at this point, and used Meaning of Life as a way to do so. I think it might have been a reaction to Terry Jones getting the directors job over him.
