What a great episode! I’m happy that Del finally got rid of Slater

"Who's Rachel??" 🤣

Jeremy Beadle was basically a TV presenter and a practical joker, he presented a couple of his own Candid Camera type shows and organised the (sometimes huge) pranks on the public. Probably his most famous prank was convincing this woman that aliens had landed in her back garden! 😂

A beautifully written episode this one. Not only the humour but some drama as well.

yep really enjoyable episode and thanks for the early post Josh

Gareth Hood

Really enjoyed watching it again and jealous of you enjoying it for the first time lol Trig waiting in the dance hall in the dark for an hour 😂 how John Sullivan wrote it all this and to make slater her husband, genius 😆

BelladonnicHazeyJaneII

Another classic episode :) Jim Broadbent is so perfect as Slater, he's great at making him so slimy and unlikable. And Trigger waiting in the dark for an hour to jump out and shout surprise! bless him 😂

You talked about the "writing room". There was no writing room. It was all written by one guy, John Sullivan.

Kieran B

No writers room, all completely written by one guy. Always something to bear in mind when watching British comedies Josh, most were probably written completely by 2 people who may bounce ideas off each other even if they don’t write at the same time (or in the same room). Then there’s some that are written by 1 or 3, very occasionally up to say about 5 with the Thick of It. The only British comedy I can think of that was written in the American style with a writers’ room was My Family, and it was formulaic and soulless - I did enjoy the first 3 seasons to a degree though.

There was an edit for music copyright in this episode. Here is what was cut: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ebQllt7Nd4k

You'll perhaps notice that this episode has evidence of how fast and loose the writer often played with certain characters' ages. Being part of the class of 1962 when the school leaving age was fifteen would make Del Boy's year of birth 1946 or 1947, which is usually (although not always) fairly consistent. But it would mean that being thirteen years younger, Rodney was born in either 1959 or 1960. However, he's referred to as being 23 in 1981, and 26 in 1989. So Rodney seems to suffer from the opposite of Soap Opera Rapid Aging Syndrome and in fact ages extremely slowly. Talking of soap operas, as a longtime devotee of crap television I found Del Boy mentioning that Rodney wakes up in time for Home & Away - an incredibly hammy Australian soap opera which airs in the early afternoon here - amusing, but it also hit a little too close to home. I'm more of a Neighbours man, though...

Its probably already been said but slater was originally cast as del but he turned and down so they got david jason instead

Like Robin said above, there’s no US style ‘writing room’, it was all written by John Sullivan, probably at his home office. Although I expect he bounced ideas off family members. I’d imagine he came up with the idea of Roy Slater being Rachel’s husband just before writing this series, I doubt he had that idea when Del met Rachel originally. But he would have written all 6 episodes before they started filming. Rachel mentioning her husband was a policeman, in a previous episode, would have been to seed the idea specifically for this episode. I don’t think there’s a lot of re-writing done during the filming of UK sitcoms, as they do in the US. Unless something doesn’t sound right during filming, or something unexpected happens to one of the actors.

Mike Doel

He was good in Harry Potter too as Prof Slugthorn. No a bit creepy though in HP, great actor, been in a number of things

Mick Mills

Funny episode. Jeremy Beadle was like a 1980's British version of Ashton Kutchers prank'd. Difference was, Jeremey Beadle pranked normal people instead of 'celebs'. It was just as fake back then as it is now.

When John Sullivan wrote the show he wanted jim broadbent who played Slater to play del boy. At the time he wasn't available so the role went to David Jason

Keith Pratt

There were several actors up for the role before David Jason was considered. Jim Broadbent was second choice.

David Lyons

In case you were wondering, Parkhurst is a prison on the Isle of Wight (just off the coast of England). Rodney's joking that Del's mates are all crooks!

Anonymous

Jim broadbent was Sullivan's first choice but was working in the west end. Enn reitel was second choice id check my facts before correcting people if I were u 😊

One of the best episodes, imo, so well written. Not a huge amount of laughs but they're peppered in just right. Sullivan was an absolute genius for pulling so many strings together. So sad we're coming to the end!

From what I understand, Beadle's About was not fake in so much that the people were in on it. The editing obviously fluffs it up, but it wasn't staged.

Yes, I was shocked to see My Family score so highly in the polls. The first few series are amusing enough but considering it'd take Josh over 2 years to see through such an onslaught of mediocrity is a bit alarming. The best British (delete that as appropriate) comedies aren't written by committee, that's for sure.

Kieran B

Depends on the series and the preferred approach of the writers and producers, I’m Alan Partridge is well known for rewrites on the day of filming (in one the car scenes Peter Baynham is laying on the back seat writing as they’re filming). But yeah I think once the gist of the thing is down it doesn’t change much, and I think you’re right on the Slater front and where the idea came in, just as a gut feeling.

Keith Pratt

My info comes from a book called "Only Fools & Horses Miscellany" written by Phil Martin. This article has the same info: https://www.mylondon.news/news/celebs/only-fools-horses-legend-david-20234513

Have a look at enn reitels bio on Wikipedia it says he was 2nd choice

Anonymous

I would tend to trust a man's personal bio above all else but maybe that's just me lol

Keith Pratt

That Wikipedia page references UK Gold as one of its sources for that info, but when you go to the UK Gold article on OF&H, that says that Enn Reitel was first choice and Jim Broadbent was second as well, so I wouldn't trust Wikipedia. It's well known for getting things wrong as anyone can edit it. Here's the UK Gold link: https://gold.uktv.co.uk/only-fools-and-horses/article/about-only-fools-and-horses/ It says, "First choice to play Del Boy was the actor Enn Reitel, but he was tied up with other work. Next to be approached was future Oscar-winner Jim Broadbent, who also turned down the role."

Anonymous

And on Google John Sullivan is quoted as saying that Jim broadbent was his first choice for del boy

Josip Buretic

I completely forgot to comment on this episode, that was a very good episode that was really fun to watch Del play Slater out again. We also have some classic Trigger moments here that are always funny. And Uncle Albert was so funny with his "Who is Rachael" 🤣I really enjoyed your reaction.
