Did you recognise the guy the insulted the annoying pregnant woman as Jay's dad?

Anonymous

I didn't like the new movie because I felt like David had a bit of redemption. However on reflection..... not so much lol. I really loved Life's Too Short though and the special they did for that was amazing. I hope that gets recommended at some point, but people were down on it despite Warwick being amazing! Even the solo effort Steven did with Hello Ladies was so good, he did a special for that as well which was so good.

Anonymous

I don't know if it's been said before but the guy in the blue overalls who always stares at the camera is Stephen Merchant's dad.

Anonymous

My favourite part was David Brent actually being himself and his date liking him for who he was. Telling Chris Finch to fuck off was the icing on the cake.

Austin Stratton

It was almost the perfect antihero comes good story.. Finally just being himself with the last date.. But that's British comedy for ya :) Gotta have a bit of cringe lmao

Anonymous

For me this is where The Office ends, the movie isn't terrible as a stand alone thing but you can tell without Merchant writing it with Gervais there is a tremendous dip in quality. Anyway fantastic reaction, this is a rare case in which a UK comedy has a good ending. Not sure what the replacement will be but looking forward to it!

BelladonnicHazeyJaneII

Loved it :) perfect ending to a great programme. I'm glad they don't over do it with Dawn and Tim finally getting together, it would have been so easy to make it a bit over dramatic or soppy like some shows/films do. The writing is spot on 👌

Anonymous

Life's too short would be great to react to, for me it was the last decent thing Gervais did that didn't involve Karl after that it was downhill with boring sitcoms and trash movies

Austin Stratton

Thanks Josh!! Because of you I've started referring to people as 'Ol' boy' and 'Ol' girl'

Ricky and steve always came up with fantastic tender moments. Just like you said your heart swells for dawn and Tim. Extras then followed with that heartwarming vibe, and ricky kept it going with Derek and afterlife. So subtle and refreshing!

Anonymous

Dawn's boyfriend isn't a piece of crap, he's just apathetic.

Ash Jeffries

It's an exquisite ending. Brent finds the right person and it actually stops him from tripping himself up and spoiling it. She's so down to earth and probably knows he exaggerates stuff to try to impress but she doesn't care, and she sticks around and brings the best out in him. David telling Chris to fuck off was spot on and never fails to be satisfying. Neil had started to revel in David's humiliation too so he doesn't smell of roses in the end. Tim and Dawn's happy ending being left to the last minute was PERFECT. The build up, Secret Santa, the gift he buys her, the sketch she'd drawn earlier in the episode, the message he writes back with the art set "Never give up". Well, l well up every time, then almost lose it when I see Dawn's anguish. When she walks back in it's such an earned moment. The song (Yazoo - Only You) playing in the background and their kiss. Such chemistry! So tender and real! It's an amazing moment! This the best work Gervais and Merchant do together. Brilliant, beautiful, sublime writing and direction, and a superb cast. Amazing watching it again and along with you Josh! The journey you've taken with the show has been great to see too. You were a little lukewarm about the very first ep, but I knew you'd grow to love the series. It's a slow burn at times but it's so meticulously built up over the course of (staggeringly only) 14 episodes, and it's a work of art overall for my money! :-)

Michael Harrop

David telling Chris Finch to fuck off is so satisfying

Keith Pratt

I love the look David gives Neil after telling Finchy to fuck off, as if to say, "and that goes for you too!"

lemmy101

Man the entire Tim and Dawn story in this ep, I spend the last 15 minutes or so with my eyes leaking every time. Greatest love story ever told! Not one usually for romance plots, but that kiss had so much weight behind it, with all the awkward subdued very British way they were with eachother for the entire show.

Ash Jeffries

Yup. A pathetic piece of crap. Thoughtless, unkind, self-centered, unimaginative. It went beyond apathy IMHO and Dawn deserved so much better.

Lee

David telling Chris Finch to fuck off is brilliant, never fails to make me smile! I hope you react to ‘Life’s Too Short’ next in the Thursday slot unless that’s been decided already? Sorry if I missed the announcement lol!

Ash Jeffries

The problem is that I don't think After Life is even remotely subtle. Gervais shovels on the sentimentality so copiously that it's beyond the point of mawkish IMHO. It's one of my (many) issues with it. There's so much detail here, so much conveyed without labouring the point, it's beautifully done. I hoped After Life would be written that way, but alas, I was to be disappointed. :-(

Starlight

Dawn and Tim getting together is the best Office moment ever. So beautiful Dawn and Tim finally got their happy ending, and I bet are happily married with kids now in 2021.

Anonymous

I like to imagine she died in child birth and he couldn't cope with bringing up a child who he blamed for Dawn's death and turned to drink and is now homeless.

Spooony

Love the reaction to the entire show. Love how real you are in these reactions.

Markos

the man in the blue overalls who keeps staring at the camera is Steve Merchants real life Dad :) :)

Anonymous

I think the office maybe has the best ending. For a sitcom. David finding a women that likes him, telling Chris to fuck off. Tim and Dawn getting together. Thanks for reacting to this series Josh.

Anonymous

David starts to show a little bit of humility and honesty when talking to Carol at the end, and what happens? she enjoys his company and wants to see him again! underneath it all, he's not such a bad guy, just a fool! Josh I can imagine the stress of watching this episode, especially the scene of Tim and Dawn having their awkward goodbye, and not knowing how it would end for them. I've seen it multiple times and I almost teared up when Tim watched her walk away, so heart-breaking thinking that two minutes earlier they were laughing and joking like old times and all of a sudden it looks like she's walking out of his life forever. I don't think I would rewatch this episode so much if she never came back! it feels like such a relief to see her walk back in that door later. One thought I had watching this was that even though the Christmas party looks a bit cheap and not at all glamorous, it feels like a very real work party, and it has actually made me really miss gatherings like this that we can't have right now. I'm not sure the intention was for viewers to watch the party and be envious in our desire to be at a party like that, but here we are! I love this finale so much, I'm a bit torn between this and Extras actually, how about you Josh? can you compare The Office and Extras? On the subject of the Brent movie, I'm on the side of "it's not that good", now it's not terrible, but I really wouldn't consider it as an Office continuation, it is nowhere NEAR as good. There are good moments, but I think it shows how valuable Steve was to the writing partnership. That's not a criticism of Ricky, a writing partnership is obviously much stronger as you have someone to bounce ideas off. I heard Ricky and Steve say once that while they wrote their shows, if there was anything the other person didn't like, it was removed from the script, even if one of them loved it, they were that serious about them both being completely satisfied with the end result. I think if Steve was involved in that movie it would be completely different. By all means watch the movie, but consider this episode the true conclusion of all these characters, and the Brent movie as a bit of a bonus. (I'll work on making my comments shorter, I know I ramble a bit sometimes! but it's hard not to ramble when talking about my favourite shows!)

one of my favourite endings to a TV show. It's rewarding and true to the show. perfect. i literally cheered when dawn and tim kissed. soooo good

Anonymous

I haven't watched this since it first aired. It was a pleasure to rewatch this series with you Josh. Your enjoyment of UK comedy absolutely melts my heart the same way this episode does. I couldn't hold back the tears when blurry little Dawn popped up in the background, I think it's worse when you know it's coming. #NEVERgiveup

Kevin Liversage

First time watching this for ages, I remember the first time when he told Finchy to fuck off, I cheered so loud! Still did. You could tell at the end he was content and more confident in himself, I think it meant a lot to him that Tim found happiness too. Did cry a bit when Dawn returned, always gets me that.

Dextrous (Lewis)

It turns out that the hero of the show is the guy who swapped his secret santa with Tim!

Chris H

I always wonder how many takes the shot at the end took. The camera shifts slightly to get the entrance in shot between Gareth and Tim's shoulders. Then it zooms in on Dawn coming in and follows her approaching the group and we get the main scene. Then as they walk away it pans back bringing Gareth and Brent back into shot and you get the subtle little smile from Brent. It must have been really carefully choreographed but it looked effortless and came across so natural and believable. This episode never gets old, absolutely love it!

NEXUS

Now you finally can understand what the look Dawn gave Tim way back in the episode when Tim decided to stay and not follow his dreams. This episode gave the pay off for that look from Dawn in the episode, she was so disappointed that Tim wasn't a man with conviction and she sore in him what she hated about herself. Tim obviously encouraged Dawn to follow her dreams unlike her clueless fiancee.

Anonymous

I've seen it atleast twice before but I still got a tear in my eye when everything ended well.

Anonymous

Like others have commented I can’t help getting teary in the last 10/15 minutes of this despite having seen it countless times. My favourite part has to be “Chris, why don’t you fuck off”. It’s like he always knew Chris Finch was an arsehole, but he tagged along with him because he thought he was the cool, popular, funny man and wanted to be part of that crowd. He’d say ‘racist’ or ‘sexist’ at an offensive joke, unless it came from Finchy, then he’d laugh. I think meeting and chatting with the lady he met in this episode made him realise he didn’t need to try to ‘fit in with the boys’ and should just be himself. Hence the next scene is him Gareth and Tim talking nonsense and enjoying it. Then Dawn comes in and the rest is history. Really enjoyed watching the full series again on here Josh, looking forward to movie Sunday’s now and whatever future Thursday’s shall bring 👍

Anonymous

Josh because I think you said after watching, that you missed what Gareth said after Dawn kissed Tim... he said "careful, she's got a fiance" and Dawn replied "not anymore" Perfect ending! 👍

Anonymous

Also David telling Finch to "Fuck off" is one of the most satisfying moments I've ever watched in television

David Lyons

The guy who plays Chris Finch does voice overs on numerous UK commercials, and still to this day (nearly 20 years later!) whenever I hear his voice trying to sell me stuff I'm always reminded of the line "Chris, why don't you fuck off!"

Super Mega Giga Chad

Had to chuckle when you said “wait a minute..there is still time” for Brent to mess things up with his date.

Anonymous

Great reaction Josh. The song in the background of the kiss is one of my favourite songs ever because of that scene. A subtle thing I love in the episode is when dawn is saying goodbye to Tim and it goes quiet and they glance at each other really quickly and then look away immediately. So much chemistry.

Anonymous

I loved watching these with you Josh. Much appreciated my man :)

AfterWorkReactions

Thanks man, I have heard a few mixed reviews about the movie but I will be most likely be checking it out soon with the movie day. Thanks man I appreciate it bud.

ArtVandalHey!

Absolute masterpiece this one! This episode instantly launches the UK office into a different tier in my opinion. They handled everything so masterfully. Tim's comments about how you spend more time with your work colleagues than your friends and family always stuck with me.

What are you watching on Thursdays next?

Saul

The Finchy shutdown is my most memorable moment too, the one single moment where you see genuine growth and courage from David, and it comes right at the end, so we can imagine a world where he became complete, happy person. I think the two specials are some of the most sublime television the BBC has ever produced and I sort of wish Ricky had left it here with Brent. I'd struggle to think of any show - drama, comedy or otherwise - that has ever wrapped up its ending better than The Office did here. Every grace note is perfect, there are no shoe-horned-in sudden lottery wins, or unrealistic promotions. It just ends in a brief flutter of small, beautiful moments. Looking at the other stuff Ricky and Steve have written, and how much less realistic and down to earth it is, and how they tended more and more to go for absurdist awkward humour set-pieces instead of threading the humour into the narrative, I'm convinced that the format of The Office was a real help for them, because it constrained the humour, grounded it in reality tv mundanity. I know people like the US version, and I've watched some of it, but it's just not operating on the same level as the original. Rewatching this series has made me appreciate its dramatic elements so much more, how carefully they balanced the comedy with the mundanity of office life and never felt the need to turn it into a normal sitcom.

Saul

...Also it makes me laugh that whenever Keith corners Tim/Dawn in that little room, Josh starts doing the same pursed-lipped slow-nod thing...very funny

Saul

...And it's only occurred to me now but that final scene, where Brent is making everyone laugh with his Frank Spencer impression, made me think of the scene earlier where he's talking to his date about how the editors 'stitched him up' by leaving out all the good bits of his time as manager...maybe he did make his employees laugh, maybe he was an entertaining guy around the office, but they(the fictional documentary makers I mean - this is getting very meta, apologies) really did edit out the funny moments. Maybe he wasn't being delusional when he said they stitched him up, and maybe the final scene of them all palling around and laughing together was a more representative depiction of what working with him was like...

L M

You should check out the film “David Brent” - I think it’s his life after the office when he starts/continues his music career.

This was a pleasure to watch with you dude. Thank you.

I definitely recommend ‘David Brent: Life on the road’ , film and Album featuring songs from the film

Austin Stratton

Lol I finished work yesterday at like, 11:45pm, get home and the days upload was up at 7.. I'm off today and there's no upload still at 10 😂😂😂

Austin Stratton

Based on the poll it's Phoenix Nights followed by Derek, then Black Books.. The next show to finish will be Alan Partridge so I'm assuming Derek will be the new Monday show and Phoenix NIghts on Thursday.

Daniel

What an incredible series and awesome finale, I watched it 20 years ago as it came out and loved it then and just as much now, I left it alone for a decade after repeat watching it for the previous decade and hand now done it all again was a pleasure watching with you, said it before and I mean it, in these times it's great to laugh with someone, your'e doing a great service! Fun fact I saw gervais as Brent on your with his band in Oxford several years back, he never broke character and his music is great too! He was performing with his band forgone conclusion, seen him on tour doing stand up a few times but seeing him on stage as Brent was a treat! Which brings me on to the Brent movie- Brent life on the road! I know Sundays are movie night, and I see that list is pretty fucking big! 😁 we can't wait that long for more Brent surely not!?

Anonymous

So concludes the saga of Dawn and Tim, the most insufferably boring, banal twosome in the history of sit-coms

SynphamyMusic

I love that the very last scene is everyone finally laughing WITH Brent. That's the cherry on top of a fantastic episode for me.

Saul

They're not meant to be interesting. They're meant to be entirely typical, unremarkable people. It wouldn't really fit with the tone of the show if Tim turned out to be an undercover kung-fu spy and Dawn was a secret hooker with mob ties. Might clash just a touch.

Charlie

I think David was scared of Finch. He knew Finch was a bully and thought that by being his "best mate" he could take himself out of the firing line a bit, and cushion the blow of Finch's cruelty towards him by dismissing it as friendly banter like he did in the quiz episode when Finch started getting nasty over losing. David didn't take losing well in that episode either, but I wonder how much of that was fear because he knew how unbearable Finch would get. I've known people like that before, and wondered how many of their mates actually liked them and how many were just trying to avoid being their next target.

Anonymous

PLEASE do a special and now react to the outtakes! They are hilarious on their own but really something when you've watched the series and realise that mniscule moments must have taken hours to film and its always Ricky's fault.

Super Mega Giga Chad

People might enjoy this, where Ricky talks to Sam Harris about comedy in an intellectual sense and other topics : https://youtu.be/SOH03c7WktU
