Spoiler Alert !!!!   Spoiler Alert !!!!   Spoiler Alert !!!!    Spoiler Alert !!!!   Spoiler Alert !!!!Spoiler Alert !!!! Spoiler Alert !!!! Spoiler Alert !!!! Spoiler Alert !!!! Spoiler Alert !!!!

Future Echoes was my favorite episode of this season and Balance of power is a close second. I look forward to the introduction of a new character to spice things up a bit. This episode was decent but I'm still curious about the Hologram Projection Box. I think I missed something in the previous episode on how they were able to project a second hologram. Maybe they shut down none critical systems to Keep the second Hologram going lol. But like I said I am probably overthinking it, this is a comedy.

Thanks for watching folks !!! Hopefully, you all are happy, safe, and healthy !!

You're correct about non-critical systems. Though you'll see the show does waver with continuity occasionally, so don't get attached to the hologram box haha. Often it seems it's just down to the writers wanting to crowbar in a good/better new idea - in the end, the continuity blips are no biggie. It's one of those series that clearly progresses and comes together over time, as you'll see especially in the next 2 series. The introduction of Kryten (already spoiled wayyyy back!) isn't quite what I think you think it is, but I don't mean that in a bad way.

Always had the same issues with this episode, it especially felt odd that Arnold 2 seemed extra Rimmer-like. I generally rationalise that he was competing with himself, hates himself and the extra time alone with Lister may have slightly mellowed Rimmer 1. But basically they just didn't have time to do everything I wanted. 😂

In the previous episode Lister says holly can sustain 2 holograms if they turn off some non essential systems, which is why 2 were able to exist at the same time. The box with the disc is sort of like an operating system, kinda like putting a game in a console. The box doesnt handle the "projection" of rimmer, just his personality. Its made much more clear in later seasons but Rimmer has somthing called a "Light Bee". Its a little device that floats around inside him projecting his image outward. It gets its instructions wirelessly from the box/holly and the disc.

Looking forward to your reactions to season 1. Season 2 does pick up a bit more. I agree with BertFredStan, the introduction of Kryten isn't quite as you would expect. I believe it is the first episode of season 2, however, I would personally watch it last. It flows into season 3 much better. I believe it was one of the last episodes produced of season 2.

Mark Carr

This is pretty much spot on AFAIK - the reasoning given by the writers and I think it might be covered in one of the novels - new Rimmer's personality is in the state it was before the explosion. Since then not only has he come back from death and lived for a spell as a hologram, but he has also spent a number of months alone with Lister, so his personality has developed compared to the old copy of him. Their ruthless and competitive nature and self hatred makes them want to always one-up each other which ends with the hostility.

David Lyons

Huh, when I watched this years ago the gazpacho soup/rosebud parallels with Citizen Kane went completely over my head, in hindsight it's pretty blatant with the breaking of the snowglobe-like item in the death video!

Michael

I only saw citizen kane for the first time a few weeks ago, glad i saw this comment! Im about to watch this :P

Yeah, the series doesn't ever go hugely into these technicalities. I mean, Rob Grant, one of the writers, has his little pet explanations but the point is that it's more Fi than Sci. If you think too much about the paradoxes and continuity errors you'll go mad because.. I mean - I won't spoil anything but if you're observant you'll find a lot of the history of the characters and the tech is retro-fitted in later seasons because it fit the purposes for the storylines and the jokes. It's hard to explain but I'm sure it's been said, a lot of the fans like to pretend each season exists in it's own little parallel universe.

Season 2 is very much like season 1, only done a lot better. Don't be expecting any big changes beyond improvement of the comedy and slightly more polished production values. It's season 3 where we get to the Red Dwarf you've seen clips of of the past. Season 2 is great though nontheless and I think you'll find it funnier.

The idea of the difference is that that the second Rimmer’s personality is from when it was first recorded, ‘our’ Rimmer has been influenced by Lister although he probably wouldn’t admit it, and has become more mellow. Think it’s explored more in the books and later in the series, it’s all blended into one in my head so can’t remember exactly. Yeah they did mention reducing power in the last episode to have a second hologram, and it probably could be thought out a bit more, but again that’s something that improves a little later on in terms of the concept.

Z is for Zed

Maybe it's a disk issue. You can't have two different disks in the one drive, but two Rimmers was fine because that's the same image? No matter, having Kochanski on the ship full time would get really annoying.

When Lister referred to pile surgery, piles = haemeroids. Cockney slang :- Farmers = Farmer Giles = Piles (in case it comes up in the future ;) )

Adam C Turek

The show can sometimes bend continuity slightly so long as it serves the plot. As for why the second Rimmer seemed so different, i can only guess that while he's with Lister he feels superior and proper, someone he can uphold his standards to - but when he's alone with himself all the time, he secretly hates himself even if he can't admit it as a flaw.

Matthew Seaward

Actually, this is a good point. In one of the newer episodes Rimmer does say that rank was an issue. (Don't want to give too much away, but if you've watched the newer episodes you'll know what episode I'm referring too..)

Mark Carr

The Norweb Federation is one of my favourite early bits from series one.

mwdoom

The box is just the input/loading device for the discs. It always bugged me that after this they didn't load another hologram but it could be explained away... maybe the other discs were hidden or whatever, but still.... the second rimmer being "worse" - maybe the disc was corrupt? maybe loading a duplicate has to create a copy of the copy? there are loads of mechanics that we arent meant to think about - we dont know how it works lol - maybe he is exactly the same really - we just "know" the original so are more sympathetic to him (r2 is clearly shown as the a hole tho lol)

Red Dwarf: come for the comedy, stay for the sci-fi. Or vice versa.

Eetu Korhonen

Funny thing is that out of those three only the Rimmer's actor was an actual actor. Lister's was a performance poet, and the cat's was a dancer. You can see that the cat's actor has some pretty nice moves at some points. Pretty interesting casting.

Kieran B

Even then Chris Barrie was an impressionist and not ‘proper actor’ Amazing that Alan Rickman was up for the role, and Alfred Molina for Lister

Steve King

No Blackadder today then?

I honestly have no idea how this won the vote for one! Not funny in the slightest compared to previous shows you’ve reacted with. I can tell you are fake smiling/laughing and very weak dialogue, and it’s hard to watch for a viewer, don’t forget we’ve all watched you belly laugh At certain clips. I subbed to you because you were a positive genuine guy. If you don’t like something you’d tell us Patreon’s. Red dwarf is leagues below extras, office, fatty towers, inbetweeners just to name a couple, I’ve watched your face during episodes of red dwarf and I feel your struggle. It’s terrible writing and I know you know it. Move on

Kevin Liversage

Red Dwarf does get a lot better.

I cannot understand the hate for season 1. For me Season 1 - 3 is some of the most intelligent comedy writing ever. Seasons 4 - 7 are good but some episodes more memorable than others. Series 8 is excellent but a bit more slapstick and gross out. 9 is...well you'll see. 10 - 13 (I think) is the Dave era... a little more glossy so loses some of the charm but still a very decent comedy. I grew up with Red Dwarf so maybe I'm a little biased, for a 13 year old me I hadn't seen anything like it and I still quote the show A LOT, especially some of Cat's lines.

AfterWorkReactions

I can see that, everyone likes something a little different so it's all good. I am really enjoying the show so far =] I don't blame you Cat has some great lines lol
