Spoiler Alert !!!!   Spoiler Alert !!!!   Spoiler Alert !!!!    Spoiler Alert !!!!   Spoiler Alert !!!!Spoiler Alert !!!! Spoiler Alert !!!! Spoiler Alert !!!! Spoiler Alert !!!! Spoiler Alert !!!!

Compared to episodes 1 and 2 this one didn't stand out as much. I would say my favorite moments were Blackadder shooting the kid, Captain Rum being Captain rum lol and them passing piss off as wine. Let me know what I missed (historical references, names, locations, etc.)that would have made this episode better.

Thanks for watching folks !!! Hopefully, you all are happy, safe, and healthy !!

Mr K

Some BBC sci fi "royalty" in this one. Tom Baker, the Fourth Doctor from Doctor Who played Redbeard and Simon Jones, Arthur Dent from Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy played Raleigh.

Yes the boomerang is from Australia. Also when someone is described as legless it means they're extremely drunk and can barely walk without falling over.

This episode is weaker than I remember to be fair. I think it might be partly your missing historical references Josh, which you admitted, but it's definitely also one of the weaker episodes of Blackadder. I still love the first episode of Blackadder 2, but on reflection, I believe Blackadders 3 and 4 are stronger. Please just be grateful that we spared you Blackadder 1; if this is a bit of a damp squib in places, six weeks of Blackadder 1 would've sent you bonkers! Haha! You will *love* Blackadder 4. I promise! I'd also recommend maybe squeezing in Blackadder's Christmas Carol at some point before the end of the month? If you're familiar with the Charles Dickens short story you'll appreciate it, I think it can be watched separately as a stand alone, and of course, it's Christmassy! :-D

Tony Smyth

Thank you Josh. NOW I have to forget that this episode ever happened... for the second time around. Way too many of the jokes are Anglocentric by nature, which in itself is an oxymoron because there's nothing funny about the British. It wasn't funny the first time...

Sir Walter Riley is famous for bring the Potato to Ireland from his expeditions to the Americas (he actually gave Queen Elizabeth 1 a Potato Plant as a gift). there's no history of it being used for anything but food and that was the joke.

When listing Blackadder episodes, I always forget this one, so I agree it isn't one of the strongest. It does rely on a lot of historical references, you're right, and of course people who didn't go to school in England probably won't have come across all these things. Oh, and a terbot is a kind of flatfish! The next episode, Money, is one of my all-time favourite episodes, although I think the best series as a whole is probably Blackadder Goes Forth.

Not seen blackadder since it was shown back in the 80’s. I remember it being good back then, but to be honest it’s not aged as well as I thought (I was a teenager back then so probably easily pleased 😃). They are actually showing re-runs of it at the moment on UK TV, and the episode I saw a couple of days ago wasn’t great either. Even if you got the historic references, I don’t think it would have improved things. The reference to potatoes is that explorer Walter Raleigh discovered them and brought them back to England along with things like tobacco. I guess the joke was asserting nobody knew what to do with potatoes in the early days. They were sort of the ‘latest thing’ so everyone had them to be cool. Like the latest iPhone or something. People were smoking them, building houses with them etc... (non of which really happened I’m sure). Nobody yet thought of cooking and eating them. (Yeah pretty lame). I seem to remember Blackadder III was better, and Blackadder goes Forth was ok as well, but possibly not as good as 3 ? I think it’s one of those shows that has its fans, but not universal appeal like OFAH, Faulty Towers, Peep Show, Inbetweeners etc. I don’t remember a particular episode where I was rolling on the floor. But there will be the odd highlight in there I’m sure. You’ve probably already seen the cream of UK sit-coms from the 80’s to present day. (Faulty Towers seems to be the timeless exception from the 70s). Even OFAH tails off a bit towards the end (although you’ve not reached that point yet) Theres a few others out there, but you are burning through the very best at the moment, so standards will inevitably drop as you work your way down the list. There were great mainstream sitcoms in the 70’s as well, but the humour was scripted for audiences of that time, and may not fully translate to a modern audience. Porridge probably stands out as the 2nd best after Faulty Towers, but like I say, you probably would need to have been around in the 70s to fully appreciate it.

Some of them voted for Brexit. Who's laughing now?

Black adder goes fourth is probably the best series of them all.

I love this episode personally. I think it all depends on whether you’re happy with subtle character comedy, or whether you need laugh out loud moments to enjoy an episode. This one is definitely the former, but I don’t find it weaker for being that way. I’d say that moving forward, apart from one episode on series 3, the rest of Blackadder up to the end of 4 is laugh out loud.

Only Fools is probably the only universally liked sitcom among everyone I know. I think it's because it's got a little bit of everything in there. A bit of silliness and slapstick, witty writing with good plot twists, jokes that everyone gets, likeable characters you care about and others you love to hate, believable characters that people can relate to, and some drama and tears thrown in for good measure. I know it's subjective but that's what makes it the "best" sitcom to me, I just wish they'd ended it with Time on our hands, it was a perfect last episode and the show really dipped after that. Some don't like the dry wit of Blackadder, the slapstick in Bottom and Fawlty Towers, the the awkwardness of Peep Show, Partridge because of Coogan, The Office and Extras because of Gervais, or the wacky humour of Boosh. I don't know if it's common but I find that people either like all of the Graham Linehan shows or none of them.

Personally I think series 2 is a cross over somewhere in between the humour in series 1 and 3. Series 2 has a blend of the silliness of series 1 and the more sophisticated humour in series 3 and 4. If I ever sit down to watch series 2 I tend to watch Beer and Chains. The rest are ok but for me not on the same level as series 3 and 4. I watch all of series 3 and 4.

Chris H

I thought I'd be good for Christmas as well but with the role reversals I don't know if it'd be the same after watching just a couple of episodes?

slashdisco

Good analysis, and completely agree. I've watched others react to Blackadder and the response to s2 is always muted appreciation, but by s4 they're laughing for thirty minutes straight. It's an EXTREMELY rare example of a series that gets better and better as it goes on, without fail. s4 is PERFECTION.

Sir Walter Raleigh was a massive name back then. He was seen as a hero for expanding the British empire and in doing so he was held in high regard by the Queen. But as ridiculously popular as he was, it all hit the fan for him. When the Queen died he was falsely accused of trying to over throw the new King,James I. They didn't see eye to eye to begin with. James wanted diplomacy with Spain and Walter Raleigh was part of the British war against Spain. It wasn't true, but because Spain hated Walter Raleigh,to get in their good books, King James locked him up for 13 years! When he got out he went in search of the "golden city" of El Dorado. Unfortunately ,some of Walter Raleigh's men went and attacked an outpost belonging to Spain on their own free will. Raleigh got the blame and the Spanish ambassador wanted him dead for it. Of course again, King James needed to kiss more Spanish ass. So he was charged with treason and found guilty in a complete bs trial and got his head chopped off

Not sure who was saying episode 1 was weak, but as far as I can see the consensus is that it's very good, as you say. Some of the references and jokes/words/sayings are probably more down to being British rather than historically significant, which is why a few things fell flat. There's also some silly humour here which is funny simply because it's silly - sometimes there isn't a deeper meaning to it (something that I find isn't as common is US comedies), although in this episode it was a bit tame by modern standards, The series does shift more towards the dry wit and sarcasm as it goes on, for which it is probably better remembered.

A good comedy does not need to make you laugh 'out loud'. As with everything it just has to be enjoyable and engaging. Don't demand an emotional kick from what you watch every 5 mins, even if it's labelled as comedy, lol. A lot of UK comedy uses very subtle and often dry humour where the main characters are the butt of the joke, which may raise more of the occasional smile than laughter. Perhaps that's because in some comedies the characters can be relatable. Of course you have crossover genres that can be defined as more than just a comedy too, eg The Office with it's documentary format and the fleshing out of characters that could almost fit a soap opera. Gervais even stated The Office wasn't supposed to be a laugh out loud comedy. Requiring 'lol' moments in order to define what is good arguably shows the differences between US and UK comedy. A UK plot twist shows the happy ending. As for Blackadder, I haven't watched it in a long time but I believe I actually preferred s2 to s3. As with everything, it's all down to personal opinion

Just echoing what a few people are saying about this season, I'm surprised at how much of it is less funny than when I watched it as a kid. Still, there are some good episodes to come. I think in this season they were experimenting with Blackadder being this type of character. In the first season he's not the same character. In this season it seems that every character is a bit whacky and extra, whereas Blackadder is the sarcastic straight-man, keeping the show anchored. Series 3 and 4 though, Tim McInnerny (Percy) is replaced with Hugh Laurie, who is just an unbelievable actor and just elevates things well above season 2. Still, good episodes to come. By the way, dunno if you noticed that Captain Rum is played by Tom Baker - probably the best Doctor Who of the 20th century.

Anonymous

Yeah, I guess it's like they're making a joke that he's building a business empire from selling spuds as things other than food but it's a either a bit too subtle or it's just not a very funny one.

I reckon that when Queenie describes her dreams - sitting on a big tree and being a sausage roll - those have got to be sex gags, haha.

I agree, Bells is one of the absolute best episodes of the show. The scene at the start and the one outside the wise woman's hovel are glorious dialogue. Beer is also fantastic.

I think promising that S4 is sooo much better than S2 is only going to lead to disappointment. This episode was a little weak but S2 is still the best series IMO. 2 > 4 > 3 >>>>>>>>> 1

Caine

4 is my favourite just because it represents so much

Don’t agree with most people in the comments ,great episode funny bits and special guest tom baker can’t go wrong with it.the flow of the episode is spot on 👍🏻 Only fools ...was ok.....back in the day not interested really watching it now where as i can watch blackadder now and still laugh at the same jokes 😀maybe its there delivery of the lines🤷‍♂️ for me this series and 4 are the best 3 is not far behind and 1 is really good but different .

I honestly could've missed that it wasn't funny to me. Before the potato was discovered people ate parsnips as the carbohydrate element of their diet. A couple of centuries later the Irish were completely dependent upon potatoes and failed crops and blight led to the death of an estimated million people.

Did you clock the actor who played Captain Rum? The most classic of classic Dr. Whos, Tom Baker!
