Spoiler Free:  Fantastic first episode, it started off a bit slow and really took off. Sorry for the late post I have been having issues with upload speeds. My new modem came yesterday and I will be installing it today. So no more extremely slow upload speeds and in some cases upload failures. I included a snapshot at the bottom of how terrible my upload speeds have been compared to my download speeds.

Spoiler Alert !!!!   Spoiler Alert !!!!   Spoiler Alert !!!!    Spoiler Alert !!!!   Spoiler Alert !!!!Spoiler Alert !!!! Spoiler Alert !!!! Spoiler Alert !!!! Spoiler Alert !!!! Spoiler Alert !!!!

This episode started off slow and really took off midway through and ended great. My favorite part was Fawlty moving the chair and slapping his employee because of it lol. While watching this I was thinking this dude has terrible customer service but his wife seems like a bit of a nag too. I think she nags him because he makes so many mistakes and has terrible customer service so she has to stay on top of him. I love how aggravated he gets, the ending was great when the customer came out and shouted the same order over again lol. Excellent start to the series.

Thanks for watching folks !!! Hopefully, you all are happy, safe, and healthy !!

That's one fast download speed... at least it is where I live. Why's the upload so trash? Looking forward to this.. love faulty towers.

Holy shit that download speed, here im happy with 50mps

AfterWorkReactions

Yeah, the download speeds are fantastic. My internet provider required I update my modem and I didn't want to pay a higher rental fee so I purchased a compatible gigabyte modem online and it gets great download speed but the uploads are trash. They said it has something to do with the firmware and they can't correct it because it's not their hardware. So for now I will be stuck with a rental until I can find a decent one to purchase. At least my upload speeds will go back to 30 megs.

This gets so much better. Some legendary episodes coming up. I apologise for what the major says. The show is over 40 years old and depicting a relic of the empire. His vocabulary is shocking in present day terms. Poor Andrew Sachs who plays Manuel takes a hell of a beating in this show. There's no camera trickery. 🤣

You need a nerd to set up your router. That upload is a settings issue.

I think fawlty towers has been spliced into my DNA. My dad used to record the audio off the tv with a microphone onto cassette. My brother and I would listen to story tapes at bedtime and occasionally fawlty towers would slip in the tape deck! Dad thought it was hilarious we'd be quoting basil at 3 and 4 years old! Sadly the last thing I did for my dad (he was in hospital 5 yrs ago) was load all the fawlty towers episodes on his iPad! He was over the moon. That was on a Sunday. On the Monday morning he passed away totally unexpectedly... devastating but I'm sure he has a good giggle at basil the night before he passed. Great reaction xxx

The basis for Basil Falwty was based on a real hotel owner called Donald Sinclair. When the Pythons were filming the television series, they stayed at the hotel he was managing and they were astonished at how rude he was. He criticised Terry Gilliam's eating habits, he had thrown Eric Idles's suitcase over the wall, thinking it was a bomb because he had just fired one of his staff, and naturally John picked all this up and when he left Python after the third series, he wrote an episode for the 'Doctor in the House' series, remembered Sinclair and wrote his episode in a hotel with a rude hotel manager. The BBC saw the episode and told John that they wanted a series based on that character, and thus Basil Fawlty was born.

Always heard of Fawlty Towers but have never watched it. First episode seems great so will be looking forward to the rest.

Ash Jeffries

So, so happy you're watching Fawlty Towers! If you liked this episode then you will be on the floor laughing over some of the episodes to come. My favourite bit from this episode is when he's on the phone to builder O'Reilly and "Lord Melbury" tells him "I'm Lord Melbury so I only sign Melbury". Long pause with Basil still on the phone, wishing he wasn't, and planning his next move... and so important does he deem the "aristocrat" in front of him that he just ends the call abruptly and coldly with "Go away." :-D

a gin and orange a lemon squash and a scotch and water PLEASE

I've been checking my email all afternoon specifically in the hope this comes out! Don't know how I missed it for so long!

i forgot how lazy/annoying sybil actually was

Lee Williams

Hi Josh when are you doing the next inbetweeners movie buddy? I’ve been craving it 😫 lol

I am so happy you are watching fawlty towers what I fantastically funny show. Some shows don't age very well and the comedy doesn't stand up in modern times but fawlty towers really does. this show has a lot of nostalgia for British people.

Ryan Lynch

This is my favourite sitcom of all time. You could ask 1000 fans to name their favourite episode, and guaranteed each of the 12 episodes would receive multiple votes. And each choice would be legitimate.

(Just) Steve

Each episode starts off calm with small moments throughout that gradually build and build until it's utter chaos at the end! There's not one dull "filler" episode in this show. (and if you like Fawlty hitting Manuel you're in for a treat)

I think some US streaming services removed the entire episode or even series not long ago. I'm not sure if that was temporary. In the UK they usually edit episodes by censoring bad words when streaming, and at worst no longer show an episode on tv for fear of the papers covering any backlash on social media. I'm not sure where these episodes are sourced from though. John Cleese - 'the Major was an old fossil left over from decades before. We were not supporting his views, we were making fun of them. If they can't see that, if people are too stupid to see that, what can one say'. I've noticed there's a video 'John Cleese vs Extremism' on ytube from the 70s or 80s which somehow manages to reflect everyone who complains on social media today. lol

Louis Hessey-Antell

The writing is tighter then anything ever written in British comedy- apart from maybe The Office. If you like that, you should die in some of the later episodes! And please don't be an SJW when it comes to the Germans episode; it's edgy, but you've seen worse!

"Fantastic first episode" is quite the accolade! I've cracked Josh's code, you guys. He describes every episode as: 5*: Fantastic 4*: REALLY fun/funny 3*: Fun/funny 2*: Decent 1*: OK Based on this chart, we're onto a winner with Fawlty Towers! So glad you loved it, dude! :-D

Anonymous

So true, Ryan, but let's play anyway! ;-) 1. Gourmet Night 2. Communication Problems 3. Waldorf Salad

Anonymous

I wouldn't say that myself, Gregg. She *is* very idle sometimes, yes - when she's on the phone - but what I love about her character is that she's very often the one who keeps the hotel running. She and Polly are the only ones who actually show any deference and direction when it comes to the guests, and there's many a time when Sybil sorts stuff out that Basil or Manuel have cocked up! That said, yes, she is a lazy dragon tart sometimes :-D What I love about this show is that every main character - Basil, Sybil, Manuel, Polly - is absolutely integral to the plot of every episode. And all four characters are IMPECCABLY acted.

Good question! I was expecting it on Thursday but Josh watched The Office instead, so he's treating Inbetweeners 2 as a movie rather than the next TV episode... even though he watched the first movie in the Inbetweeners slot. Inbetweeners 2 was the next highest polling movie, followed by Borat. Then again, it was higher placed than The World's End yet he already watched that!

Andrew Sanderson

so pleased you enjoyed it mate. communication problems is really funny. the scene where she isn't happy with her room! absolutely hilarious.

Anonymous

i watched a few of these by random back in the day aint it but never knew what the show was about, maybe it was before my time but glad i decided to watch this its gonna be good watching the whole thing start to finish, i thought the first ep was funny lol

Anonymous

haha good observation, i will use this on other shows to see

Anonymous

Completely agree re. Communication Problems! Even amongst twelve *literally perfect* episodes, that one will always stand out in my mind, like a herd of wildebeest sweeping majestically... ;-D

Ash Jeffries

All this talk of favourite episodes... I love them all but my favourite three are The Hotel Inspectors, The Germans, and Communication Problems. Oh, and Waldorf Salad. Oh, and The Psychiatrist... oh, and... Yeah, most episodes are top drawer. There's only one I think was a little disappointing and I won't say which one as I don't want to taint Josh's enjoyment. That said, listing favourites could easily build expectations and in fairness, even the one I felt wasn't as good as the rest is still high quality TV... this show is the benchmark for UK situation comedy I think in terms of pure comedy. Other shows may have excelled with the drama too (Only Fools and Horses, The Office) but for pure laughs... Fawlty Towers is where it's at. And it really is timeless. 1975 and sure, it looks dated, but it's aged well, certainly better than some 1990 sitcoms. The Major, as mentioned, uses inappropriate language on occasion, but I don't feel it's being excused, rather it's a matter-of-fact part of his make up and character based on his age and own life history. Unfortunately, a man like him would not have been politically correct and it was a time when language wasn't read and modified to be reverent and fair. These caveats are only required I think because the use of the language is different to today whereby it would be used as a joke to underline how wrong and inappropriate it is. In the Major's case I think it was just incidentally how he spoke.

That is awesome man, thanks for the info! I am looking forward to watching more! You all have been telling me for a while how great this show it =]

AfterWorkReactions

That is awesome, thanks for all the info bud! This show has a lot of hype from you all so I am excited to keep watching!

My favourite part in this episode is when he's outside and the police are taking away the 'lord'. Fawlty is screaming "Just one! Just one!" LMAO. I was hoping the police would say "oh, go on then."

Adam C Turek

brilliant show but as a bartender (including table service) this show brings out my customer service anxiety when things go to hell - especially when the complaints are unfounded but you still have to be "nice" to them

Hey man do you plan on doing the Extras Xmas Specials? I've not heard any mention of them is all and I think they are essential to watch to finish off Extras :)

BelladonnicHazeyJaneII

Great reaction as always Josh, knew you'd like this :) There isn't a bad or even average episode of FT. I'm looking forward to watching it again, it's been years since I watched them tbh.

Anonymous

Honestly the 1st episode is the only one that I would qualify as not as good. It goes really well after that :) And season 2 (6 episodes) is perfection :) Also check Blackadder - 4 seasons.

Yes, another uk classic 😂👍 awesome bro

Don't forget to keep tabs on the 'Fawlty Towers' sign post at the start of each episode all the letters are jumbled up and spell out different things each time haha
