It feels more like the tone of the show doesn’t suit him - it’s quite a sociable, cheery show and he doesn’t seem able to get into it.

Frankie gets much better as the series goes on imo. As you said at first there's a definite air of him thinking Taskmaster is maybe a backwards step for him, but he loosens up a lot and ends up fitting in with the tone of the show quite well I think.
