So, thank you all for responding to the poll and giving me your feedback. I think I have  made my decisions regarding early access as a perk:

  • For most posts, early access periods will be shortened. Art posts will be queued up to go public within a day or so of going up on patreon, or at least go up at the next 'optimal' day if I can't post right away.
  • Bigger posts and projects will still have a longer early access period. This would mainly be for big animations and videos, like when I released Hiro the Dense, Curly Brace Hacked, or any of my DND / youtube videos. (And it basically can apply to all youtube content, since it's easy for me to make something unlisted, though some stuff is more time sensitive.) If I can't upload it preemptively, like I can with Youtube, then there will be a watermark identifying it as early access. The duration will otherwise mostly be unaffected for this kind of content.
  • If they're kinda middle ground like a comic or animated gif or a quick dub for instance, then the early access version will release to patreon with a watermark identifying it as a patreon/substar exclusive. The early access period will still be shortened a bit, not as much as for conventional art posts, but it'd mostly be for things like comics or animated gifs as these kinda posts seem to be the most vulnerable to leaks.
  • Variants to images won't be affected; I'll still share some of them with the original post, some a while after posting the base version, while other variants will still be supporter-exclusive, all depending on the content itself.
  • Likewise, WIPs won't be affected either. They'll still be posted periodically for anything that I don't finish in one night, and will stay a predominately supporter-exclusive perk, since I usually don't post WIPs on my pages.

I'm still open to ideas, feedback, and suggestions if anyone has any others to offer.

Unrelated news that doesn't affect or change anything: patreon has rolled out subscription billing as an option for creator pages. They were going to force everyone onto this back in December 2019, but they learned from their mistakes and have implemented it as an optional feature. I'm not going to use it, because my page doesn't work well with it, but I figured I'd mention this in case anyone saw news of it and had any concerns.

this is very reasonable, and ultimately, it's your art. I'm just along for the ride.
